Buckle Up: Harvard Friends Strike Gold at Leadville

More than two decades ago, six college kids from the Boston area headed West to strike it big and, thanks to savvy planning and a string of daring escapades, returned home with a lucrative haul.

Their destination: Vegas. Their game: blackjack. Their prize: cold, hard cash. Their university: M.I.T.

Last winter, four college kids from a university a mile away hatched a new plan to head West in pursuit of a hefty reward. Their game was far different – no cards to count; the number 25 more important than 21. The prize they sought amounted to little more than a partial wardrobe upgrade and a lifetime of personal pride. Caron Makes Gritty 100-Mile Debut at Eastern States

Patrick Caron has been running ultramarathons for just shy of a year, and he has quickly made his presence felt on the trails of New England.

For his 100-mile debut, however, he traveled to the Rust Belt to take on the rugged trails of north-central Pennsylvania at Little Pine State Park in Waterville. Rather than choosing more friendly terrain for his first 100, Caron elected to tackle the Eastern States 100 on course that is equal parts gorgeous and grueling with its stunning scenery and 19,000-plus feet of vertical gain. Bay Staters Bring the Heat: Records Fall at Summer Classic

MEDFIELD, Mass. – A year after slogging through sauna-like conditions at the TARC Summer Classic, runners were the ones causing the heat at the sixth running of the event Saturday, Aug. 13, at Noon Hill Reservation.

Gone were the 91-degree temperature and thick humidity of 2015. In their place, temperatures in the 70s, a gentle breeze, and dry trails created ideal conditions for runners to scorch the smooth, winding dirt and pine needle-covered singletrack course. The runners obliged, with two defending their titles from a year ago and three smashing course records in the 50K and 40-mile races.
