Greg Soutiea set a high standard for the Sweltering Summer 8-Hour Ultra during the 2015 running of the event when he logged an event-record 55.794 miles.

In 2016, he raised the bar even higher.

Soutiea, 32, of Quincy, Mass., set a new Sweltering Summer standard by running 59.703 miles around the .355-mile dirt and cinder track at Clapp Park on Saturday, Aug. 6, in Pittsfield, Mass.

Soutiea now owns the top two performances in the three-year history of the eight-hour event. The inaugural Sweltering Summer in 2013 was a six-hour event.

Runner-up Padraig Mullins, 34, of Cambridge, Mass., finished with 52.595 miles, good for the third-most miles in event history.

Alicia Eno, 39, of Shrewsbury, Mass., finished third overall and was the top female finisher with 48.686 miles. Her total was the second-most by a woman at the event, trailing the 51.83 turned in by Daniele Cherniak in 2014. Eno was also the top female finisher in 2015 when she recorded 48.331 miles.

Keith Duffy, 40, of Sudbury, Mass., was the third-place male and fourth overall with 45.843 miles. Fifth- and sixth-place honors went to the second- and third-place women as Ann Allessandrini, 56, of Johnsonville, N.Y., recorded 45.133 miles, and Geraldine Pires, 32, of Fairfield, Conn., ran 43.356 miles.

In total, 66 runners participated in the eight-hour event, and 60 ran beyond a marathon. Some just barely eclipsed the 26.2-mile marathon barrier, while 47 runners eclipsed the 30-mile mark and 13 surpassed the 40-mile mark.

Proceeds from Sweltering Summer—which was conducted by the Berkshire Ultra Running Community for Service—benefitted Moments House, a facility that provides support for residents of Berkshire County who are battling cancer and the family members who care for them.
