The sun was shining at Sandy Neck Beach as runners arrived on Saturday morning, Jan. 12, and made their way from the cozy confines of the Snack Shop down to the starting line on the sand.
The blue sky, lack of snow, and seaside location may have hinted that it was a warm day, but that was far from the case. The Cape Cod Frozen Fat Ass 50K has had its share of diverse weather during its first 12 years, ranging from warm temperatures and sunny skies, to rain and snow. The 13th edition of the race in Barnstable, Mass., was no different. The sun was a disguise for the 20-degree temperature and strong wind gusts that froze the runners to their core. One thing was certain when runners gathered at the starting line for the Cape Cod Trail Race 50K on Sunday, April 8: the outcome would be different from any of the four prior editions of the race.
Rob Levy and Kara Spera – back-to-back winners in 2016 and 2017 – weren’t in the field this year. Neither were 2015 winners Jake Dissinger and Anne-Marie Monette nor 2014 winners Eric Ahern and Kelly Manchester. That cleared the path for new champions to be crowned. One of Massachusetts’ new ultramarathons in 2017 won’t return for a second year.

BARNSTABLE, Mass. – The sun was already shining high above Cape Cod Bay when the cars started trickling into the parking lot at Sandy Neck Beach. It wasn’t long before the lot was nearly full of cars, many adorned with bumper stickers boasting of the long distances the drivers had run, races they’d conquered, or mountains they’d climbed.
On this day, however, they weren’t here to earn another sticker or shiny medal. Instead, they were in Barnstable to log some long miles, gauge their levels of toughness and grit, and enjoy a hearty supply of camaraderie. The 2018 Massachusetts ultrarunning season originally was set to begin bright and early on Jan. 3 with the G.A.C. Fat Ass 50K, but the 20th edition of that event was called off due to single-digit temperatures and a wind chill well below zero.
Due to that change of plans, the Bay State’s 2018 ultramarathon race calendar will officially kick off with the Cape Cod Frozen Fat Ass 50K at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable, Mass. The 12th annual event is put on by the Cape Cod Ultrarunning Society, and it includes a 25K race for runners who would rather not make a second figure-eight loop of the sandy course.
