MassUltra Roundup: July 17-19 Weekend

If it’s the middle of July in New England, that means one thing for ultrarunners: it’s Vermont 100 weekend. Hundreds of runners gathered for the historic race on the trails and dirt roads in and around West Windsor, Vt., and the race leads off this edition of the roundup. But Vermont 100 wasn’t the only show in town. In Massachusetts, the second running of 12 Hours of Lawrence Woods played out at the Middlesex Fells, and we’ll have that covered in a separate recap. Additionally, Vermont played host to a second event – the Aliza Lapierre Fan Club 50K in Richmond, which we also have covered here. Though it was a big weekend in the region, several runners also ventured across the country to take on races, from New York, to Nevada and Washington state for other classic 100-milers, and we have those covered here, too.

Vermont 100

Rain, resilience and big-time performances were aplenty at the 35th edition of the Vermont 100 on July 18-19 in West Windsor, Vt. One of the oldest 100-milers in the United States and the second-oldest on the East Coast once again attracted a big field and talented runners to take on the trails and dirt roads of rural Vermont, amassing around 17,000 feet of climbing along the way. Ultimately, Keith Nadeau and Megan Eckert delivered the biggest performances and carried the day. In the male field, Nadeau led nearly wire to wire and the Vermont resident steadily built a comfortable lead on his way to securing the victory in 15:41:42. New Hampshire resident Aaron Stevens was second in 16:12:35, followed closely by Cody Cutler of Massachusetts in 16:15:26 to complete the male podium. Christopher Petroff of Connecticut was fourth overall and the top solo division finisher in 16:23:33. Other top performers from New England included Massachusetts residents Gregory Ulm (seventh, 17:36:10.2), Jacob Varekamp (eighth, 17:36:10.3) and Tilman Dette (10th, 18:16:42). Of the 208 men who started the race, 160 finished within the 30-hour time limit including 73 who did so in less than 24 hours.

Running in the solo division, Eckert, of New Mexico, pulled away from the female field in the second half of the race and won handily in 17:19:56, followed by Vermont resident and top crewed runner Joanna Fortier in 18:16:52. Camille Herron of Arizona was third in 18:31:58. Other top New Englanders in the female field were Vermont residents Shelby Farrell (fourth, 19:34:48), Lila Gaudrault (sixth, 20:25:22), Ashley Hensel-Browning (ninth, 20:49:54) and Sarah Bam Logan (10th, 20:54:22), as well as New Hampshire’s Taylor Miller (eighth, 20:38:31). Vermont’s Clorice Reinhardt was the 11th-place finisher and second in the solo division in 21:23:22. Of the 68 women who started the race, 61 finished within the time limit including 25 who went sub-24.

In addition to the 100-miler, the event also included a 100K race. Massachusetts resident James Gilbert led the male field of 105 finishers, winning in 9:08:00, followed by Maxime Bibeau of Quebec in 9:15:50, and Robin Hewson of Rhode Island in 9:21:59. Therese Howe of Maryland topped the 67 finishers in the female field in 10:47:00, followed by Brooke Laird of Washington, D.C., in 10:54:40, and Massachusetts resident Elvira Fleury in 11:19:05.

Aliza Lapierre Fan Club 50K

The Richmond Trail Running Club played host to the fifth running of the Aliza Lapierre Fan Club 50K and 26K in celebration of one of its own – New England great Aliza Lapierre – on Saturday, July 18, in Richmond, Vt. Runners once again took on a mix of technical trails and dirt roads, with those in the ultra amassing 5,000 feet of climbing.

A pair of first-timers at the event made their marks by breaking the male course record as 23-year-old Shane Skiff of Williston, Vt., and 33-year-old Akeo Maifeld-Carucci of Hartland, Vt., both went under the previous mark. Skiff earned the win in 4:21:35 and Maifeld-Carucci followed less than a minute later in 4:22:25. Caleb Clark, 37, of Danville, Vt., was a distant third in 5:11:58. Laura O’Brien, 23, of Richmond finished eighth overall and first in the female field in 5:48:10. She was joined on the podium by 25-year-old Samantha Applebaum of Portland, Maine, and 28-year-old Rachael McKee of Burlington, Vt., who finished in 6:24:25 and 6:24:28, respectively. Thirty-three runners finished the 50K within 10 hours.

An additional 37 runners completed the 26K, led by 49-year-old Eli Enman of Huntington, Vt., in 2:45:56. Evey Slavik, 19, of Burlington, Vt., topped the female field and finished fourth overall in 2:57:37.

Wakely Dam Ultra

Ryan Kingsley is getting comfortable at the challenging Wakely Dam Ultra. The 31-year-old from West Hartford, Conn., has completed the race three times, and each time he has climbed further up the field. He finished 15th overall in 2023 and sixth in 2025. After a year away, Kingsley returned for the 25th edition of the Wakely Dam Ultra 55K on Saturday, July 18, in Piseco, N.Y., and he narrowly missed placing on the podium.

Kingsley was among the fastest runners at the self-supported race that took runners on a journey along the trails of the Adirondack Park wilderness with 3,300 feet of climbing along the way. Maxwell Hoffman, 25, of Buffalo, N.Y., pulled away from the field and won in 5:16:42, but the race for the final places on the podium was determined by less than two minutes. Kingsley was fourth in 6:00:18, just behind runner-up Liam Ebner, 26, of Lake Placid, N.Y. (5:58:32) and third-place Michael Nicoles, 35, of Rochester, N.Y. (5:59:17). Schuyler Stuart, 28, of Marcellus, N.Y, led the female field in 8:00:23.

Forty-nine runners finished within 10 1/2 hours.

Devon Olson, 38, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Andrea Tarras, 42, of Chilliwack, B.C., finished 1-3 overall and were the top male and female finishers in 18:33:21 and 22:06:31, respectively.

Jason Reynolds, 47, of Greenwich, Conn., conquered the course and its 20,000 feet of climbing and placed 24th overall in 28:08:39. It was Reynolds’ second 100-mile finish, joining a resume that included a 21:12:25 performance at the 2024 Vermont 100. Additionally, Amanda Vicinanzo, 37, of Concord, N.H., was the 110th and final finisher in 36:00:00, for her first 100-mile finish.
