At least 22 ultramarathons took place in the United States last weekend, and at least three of them included runners from Massachusetts. Those races – the Hashawha Hills 50K in Maryland, the Antelope Canyon 50-miler in Arizona, and the Post Oak Lodge 50K in Oklahoma – are featured in this week’s roundup.
Hashawha Hills 50K
Russ Dresher notched his second strong finish at the Hashawha Hills 50K on Saturday, Feb. 25, in Westminster, Md.
A year after placing sixth overall in 4:48:12, Dresher notched another sub-five-hour finish. This time, however, the 34-year-old resident of Hudson, Mass., narrowly missed out on a top-10 performance on an unusually warm February day where the temperatures were in the 60s.
Jarrod Brennet, 26, of Mount Rainer, Md., was the overall winner and lone runner to finish in less than four hours. His winning time was 3:56:19. The top 16 finishers completed the course in less than five hours. That included Dresher who placed 12th overall in 4:52:14.
A total of 99 runners completed the race within the nine-hour time limit.
Antelope Canyon Ultramarathons
A pair of Bay State residents headed west to tackle the stunningly scenic Antelope Canyon 50-mile course on Saturday, Feb. 25, in Page, Ariz.
Surrounded by panoramic views of Lake Powell and the Colorado River, Christian Andrade and Lisa Klinkenberg were challenged by sand, slickrock and singletrack trails. They ran through slot canyons and dashed across desert en route to completing the course.
Neither was as fast as Randolph Curley, the 34-year-old from Tonalea, Ariz., whose winning time of 7:47:47 was 15 minutes faster than his nearest competitor. First-place female Heidi Sauerland, 31, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., finished 16th overall in 9:33:20.
Both Massachusetts residents finished in the top half of the field.
Andrade, 41, of Worcester, Mass., placed 66th overall in 11:47:46.
Klinkenberg, 43, of Winchester, Mass., finished 92nd overall and the 24th female in 12:12:56. The race was a tune-up for Klinkenberg who is building up to the Ultra Race of Champions 100K in May in Skylark, Va.
A total of 204 runners finished the 50-mile race within the 15-hour time limit.
The event also included a 55K race, however no Massachusetts residents took part at that distance.
Post Oak Lodge Challenge 50K
Joseph Bafaro, Jr., finished precisely in the middle of the pack at the Post Oak Lodge Challenge 50K on Saturday, Feb. 25, in Tulsa, Okla.
The event, which was organized by the Tulsa Running Club, was a two-loop course consisting of a mixture of farm roads, gravel and singletrack dirt. Bafaro was one of 51 runners to complete the race within 10 hours. The 46-year-old resident of Worcester, Mass., finished 26th – exactly in the middle – in 6:14:48.
Victor Brown, a 27-year-old Tulsa local, was the overall winner in 3:57:53 and was the lone runner to finish in less than four hours. It marked his second consecutive victory at the event. The top four finishers completed the race in less than five hours.
