A staple of the West Coast trail-running scene – Trail Camp – is returning to Massachusetts.
Five years after the Trail Animals Running Club last played host to a trail-running camp in the Bay State, Douglyss Giuliana, head running coach at Adapt & Thrive Performance, is resurrecting the experience. Giuliana will play host to a three-day trail-running camp June 24-26 at Harold Parker State Forest in Andover, Mass.
It was a record-setting weekend for ultrarunners in New Hampshire as five of the six course records fell at the fourth edition of the White Lake Ultras. In addition to that increasingly popular event, a few runners from the region traveled elsewhere to race. That included a few 100-mile finishers on the C&O Canal, as well as Winchester resident Tom Flummerfelt’s first foray into Backyard Ultra racing in Wisconsin. Those events are featured in this edition of the roundup.
WESTON, Mass. – The last time the Trail Animals Running Club played host to the TARC Spring Classic, runners dodged or splashed through puddles and a volunteer dumped buckets of wood chips near the timing mats to try to keep them from becoming submerged.
Following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trail Animals Running Club once again played host to the TARC Spring Classic 50K, marathon, half marathon and 10K trail races on Saturday, April 23, in the Jericho Woods of Weston, Mass. It was the 10th running of the event, and more than 200 runners took part in the various distances offered.
The return of the Trail Animals Running Club’s TARC Spring Classic meant more than 200 trail- and ultra-runners flocked to Weston, Mass., during the April 23-24 weekend to race, but several runners ventured to other places to race, too. That included two popular Connecticut races – the Enchanted Forest Ultra and the Jack Bristol Lake Waramaug Ultras. Those regional races highlight this edition of the roundup.
MILTON, Mass. – A grin stretched across Howie Breinan’s face as he stood alongside 16 other runners a few dozen yards from Houghton’s Pond. It was 6 a.m., on Saturday, April 16, and a thin coating of clouds dusted the sky at this twilight hour.

Just as race director Amy Rusiecki was starting to lay the foundation for the Beast Coast Trail Running Series in 2019 and early 2020, she encountered a massive route-blocking blowdown in the form of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the better part of 18 months, Rusiecki was forced to cancel races, including the Mt. Toby Ultra 50K and 24K twice.
Normalcy gradually returned to the Beast Coast series in the latter half of 2021 as races returned. Finally, after two years of uncertainty, the 2022 series enjoyed an optimistic start with the return of the Mt. Toby races on Saturday, April 9, in Sunderland, Mass. More than 150 runners showed up to race the two distance offerings, tripling the turnout from the inaugural running in 2019.
The 26th edition of the Trail Animals Running Club’s original event, the Trail Animals “Don’t Run Boston” 50K, took place on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, Mass. In addition, the 13th edition of the DRB 50-miler took place. The day began with cloudy skies and 51-degree temperature for the 6 a.m. wave start, clouds and 58-degree temperature for the 8 a.m. start, and a high in the low 70s as the sun came out and heated up the afternoon.
In this week’s roundup we take a look back a few weeks to April 3 when Padraig Mullins of Norton, Mass., represented his local ultrarunning community and his native Ireland proudly with a personal-best day at the Sri Chinmoy 100K in the United Kingdom. Additionally, we highlight the always-tough Traprock 50K in Connecticut, ultrarunning debuts at the Orcas Island 50-miler in Washington and Desert Rats 50K in Colorado, as well as a local runner’s return to the Rattler Trail Race in Colorado Springs.
