Following a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TARC Ghost Train Rail Trail Race returned for its 12th running on Oct. 16-17 on the Milford and Brookline Rail Trail in Brookline, N.H. The event offered its traditional 30-hour ultra, as well as a Sunday 15-mile race. This year’s race threw a little bit of everything at the runners, from an unseasonably warm Saturday where the temperature climbed into the upper-70s, to heavy rain overnight.

When the Trail Animals Running Club announced the cancellation of the 2021 TARCtic Frozen Yeti, it was done with a promise.

Trail Animals’ TARCkey Trot Set for Nov. 13 Return
Since its inaugural running in 2016, the Trail Animals Running Club’s TARCkey Trot 6-Hour Ultra has been a popular way for local trail- and ultrarunners to burn some pre-Thanksgiving calories. After four successful years, the 2020 edition was forced to be canceled due to the worsening COVID-19 pandemic.

Seventy-seven runners turned out to take on the 40-mile and 50K trail ultramarathon races, with 46 ultimately finishing their respective distances on a hot and humid day where the temperature soared to 90 degrees.

MILTON, Mass. — Twenty-five years ago, Howie Breinan dug his heel into the dirt path near Houghton’s Pond and drew a starting line for the “Don’t Run Boston” 50K at the Blue Hills Reservation. It was the first official race sponsored by the young Trail Animals Running Club, and one of the earliest trail ultramarathons to exist in Massachusetts.
A quarter century after that inaugural event, Breinan once again drew a starting line with his heel on Sunday, April 18, and welcomed runners to the 25th edition of the classic event at the Blue Hills.
