MEDFIELD, Mass. – A few moments after completing his first of four 10-mile loops at the Trail Animals Running Club’s TARC Summer Classic, Jason Bacon called out to Race Director Laura Ricci.
Bacon didn’t need medical attention, and he wasn’t making any plans to drop out of the race. Instead, he needed to make an introduction.

Events put on by the Berkshire Ultra Running Community for Service (BURCS) are known for their family reunion-type vibes. That was the case once again when the BURCS played host to the Sweltering Summer 8-Hour Ultra on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Clapp Park in Pittsfield, Mass., where familiar faces were aplenty – though it was an event newcomer who ran away with the overall victory at the 12th annual event.
The Berkshire Ultra Running Community for Service (BURCS) played host to the 12th annual Sweltering Summer 8-Hour Ultra and 5K on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, at Clapp Park in Pittsfield, Mass. Runners had eight hours to complete as many .355-mile laps of the park’s dirt and cinder track as they wanted.

Runners took on a distance-specific 100.7-mile race or time-based 72-hour, 48-hour, 24-hour, 12-hour and 6-hour ultras on a 1.9-mile cross-country ski loop course. Runners took on either a distance-specific 100.7-mile ultramarathon or a variety of time-based race options of 72, 48, 24, 12 or 6 hours, all of them on a 1.9-mile loop course on cross-country ski trails.
Beast Coast Trail Running played host to the inaugural Edge Hill Trail Race 50K and 8K at the Edge Hill Conservation Land in Ashfield, Mass. Runners raced on a mix of singletrack trails, dirt roads and a little bit of pavement. More than 100 runners took part in the first-year event.
The storm was a comin’, that much was certain as runners arrived at Pittsfield State Forest for the 11th running of the Berkshire Ultra Running Community for Service’s Vegan Power 50K, as well as its 25K and 5-mile trail races, on Saturday, June 22, at Pittsfield State Forest in Pittsfield, Mass.
