“To Hale and Back” Kicks Off TARC Ultra Season

What a difference a year makes.

The 2015 TARC ultra-running season opened with a Spring Thaw 6-Hour Race that came well before Massachusetts’ mountains of record-setting snowfall had melted away.

The 2016 TARC ultra season-opener relocated from Andover to Westwood, Mass., was scheduled for two weeks later, and rebranded itself as “To Hale and Back,” giving the trail animals an opportunity to emerge from winter hibernation for a six-hour trail race at Hale Reservation.

Ninety-six runners took to the trails Saturday, March 26, for a chilly but comfortable, snow-free six hours of running at Hale Reservation. No post-holing, Yaktrax or microspikes necessary; a 3.5-mile loop of mostly singletrack trail and rolling hills provided plenty of opportunity to run easy while ticking away the miles. Early-season ultramarathons don’t get much more unique than Moab Red Hot in Moab, Utah.

From its unusual 55-kilometer distance – a departure from the standard 50K – to its distinctly Moab slick rock terrain and surrounding views of Canyonlands National Park, Arches National Park, and the La Sal Mountains, Moab Red Hot presents a heavy dose of trail-running temptation.

Cape Cod Ultrarunners Celebrate 10 Years of Frozen Fun

The Cape Cod Ultrarunning Society kicked off 2016 in the same way it has each year for the past decade: with a character-building test of endurance, commitment, and tolerance to the elements.

Three from Massachusetts Tapped in Western States Lottery

Competition for entry into the Western States 100 is almost as difficult as the race itself.

A total of 3,510 runners—a Western States lottery record by more than 800 applicants—applied for the 355 spots up for grabs in the 2016 Western States lottery. The lottery took place December 5, 2015, at the Placer High School auditorium in Auburn, CA.

“Run Free” returns to Massachusetts

ARLINGTON, Mass. – Nine months after making its United States debut with a screening at the 2015 Boston Marathon, “Run Free: The True Story of Caballo Blanco” returned to the Bay State for a second viewing Tuesday night at the Regent Theatre.

The film has earned considerable acclaim throughout the industry, including a 2015 Spotlight Documentary Film Awards Silver Award, and an International Award of Merit from the 2015 International Film Festival for Peace, Inspiration, and Equality. It also was voted the Best Mountain Running Film at the 2015 Ladek Mountain Film Festival, Best Film on Running at the 2015 INKAfest Mountain Film Festival, and Best Documentary at the 2015 Arizona International Film Festival.
