From the West Coast to the East Coast, Massachusetts ultrarunners continue to pile up strong performances. That includes an overall first-place finish by Cambridge resident Jenny Hoffman at the Lumberjack 100-miler in Washington, a top-10 performance by Boston’s Joe McConaughy at the highly-competitive Lake Sonoma 50-miler in California, a top-10 finish by Boston’s Will Holets at the Merced Canyon 44K in California, and Brian Rusiecki secured his third straight victory with a win at the Traprock 50K in Connecticut.
April 8-9 was the busiest weekend of the year so far for Massachusetts’ runners heading out of state to take on ultramarathons – and many of them delivered big performances. Of particular note, Joe McConaughy and Jake Dissinger headed cross-country to the high-profile Gorge Waterfalls 100K and turned in some of the strongest performances of the day. Closer to home, Brian Rusiecki headlined a massive pack of Bay State residents at the Runamuck 50K in Vermont where he notched his second victory in two weeks.
April 1-2 was a busy weekend for ultramarathons nationwide, and plenty of Massachusetts runners stepped to the starting line at out-of-state events. Five races made this week’s roundup, and others may be rolled into next week’s roundup as results and details are still coming in.
This week, Natick’s Matthew Knights made his 100-mile debut with a speedy performance at Umstead and 100-mile veteran Adena Schutzberg of Somerville also snagged a buckle; South Deerfield’s Brian Rusiecki returned to the top of the podium with a victory at the Naked Prussian; Quincy’s Greg Soutiea threw down more than 120 miles at the Run4Water; and Bay State residents also secured hard-earned finishes at the Georgia Death Race and the New Jersey Ultra Festival.
