A large portion of New England ultrarunners have had their sights set on this weekend’s Ghost Train Ultras; more than 300 will take on the multiple out-and-back course in Brookline, N.H. Not everyone has been focused on Ghost Train, however. Runners have traveled beyond Massachusetts to tackle a variety of ultras across the United States. This includes races in Maine, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Utah and Canada in recent weekends. No performance was longer than the 238-mile journey that Norton’s Christopher Cappellini delivered at the inaugural Moab 240, and his effort leads off this week’s roundup. MassUltra Roundup: Grindstone, Cuyamaca, Hennepin, Joe English Twilight Challenge, Oregon Coast, No Name, and NipMuck
More than 50 ultramarathons across the United States made Oct. 6-8 the busiest weekend of racing in 2017. Although there were no ultras in Massachusetts, plenty of Bay State runners took on the trails in other states on plenty of challenging courses. Multiple runners earned 100-mile finishes – including a second-place performance by Brian Rusiecki at Grindstone in Virginia, and many runners logged their first 100-mile finishes – including Scot DeDeo at the Hennepin Hundred in Illinois.
This week’s roundup features five races from the past weekend – and there are plenty more results we’re still tracking down (looking at you, Bromont, Farm to Farm, and Tesla Hertz). Additionally, we tracked down local results from the NipMuck “Heavy” Trail Marathon from Oct. 1.

MassUltra Roundup: Vermont 50, Stagecoach, and TNFEC-Utah
A former Massachusetts resident returned to New England and dueled one of the Bay State’s most dominant ultrarunners of the past decade at the Vermont 50 while Cambridge’s Sarah Burke secured a victory in the 50K. Additionally, Trail Animals Running Club legend Chris Haley nabbed a 100-mile belt buckle in Arizona, and a pair of local runners took on the Wasatch Mountains in Utah. MassUltra Roundup: Pisgah, Forgotten Forest, Boulder Field, and SRT
Local ladies secured the top three places at Pisgah in New Hampshire, Southborough’s Brian Butterfield won the Forgotten Forest 9-Hour in Connecticut, and Bay State residents also took on the Boulder Field 50K in Pennsylvania and SRT 50K in New York during the Sept. 16-17 weekend. MassUltra Roundup: Tahoe 200, Pine Creek Challenge, and a Charity Bike Ride on Foot
One traditional and two non-traditional ultramarathons are featured in this week’s roundup. The Pine Creek Challenge is the traditional 100-miler, thanks to its traditional distance. Two-hundred-milers are a bit more unusual, but Massachusetts ultrarunners took on one of those last weekend. MassUltra Roundup: Jay Peak and the Grand Traverse
Four in-state ultramarathons loom on the calendar this month, making it a massive month of ultra options in Massachusetts. That said, the month opened quietly for Bay State runners at out-of-state events. The mountains of Vermont and Colorado called – as did the Alps, which will be covered in another story – with runners taking to the trails at the Jay Peak Ultra and the Grand Traverse. MassUltra Roundup: Fat Dog, Waldo, Silverton Alpine, and Lean Horse
Tom Morton has finished numerous 100-milers, but he notched a 120-mile finish in Canada; Jesse Kropelnicki had a breakout debut at the 100K distance in Oregon; Paul Rohde was speedy at altitude in Colorado; and Quang Le earned his first 100-mile finish while racing in South Dakota.
We also have updates on a pair of former Massachusetts residents who turned in big performances in their new states – Colton Gale and Charles Hornbaker.
