The inaugural TARCtic Frozen Yeti 30-Hour Ultra and 15-mile races took place Feb. 2-3 at Hale Reservation in Westwood, Mass. In the 30-hour race, 108 runners completed at least 30 miles. Another 55 finished the 15-mile race.

The warm weather of the west coast and southwest attracted ultrarunners from Massachusetts and greater New England in recent weeks. That included Jeremy Scanlan of Worcester, Mass., who earned a podium finish at the Arches Ultra in Utah. Frigid Weather Doesn’t Deter Record Turnout at 13th Cape Cod Frozen Fat Ass
The sun was shining at Sandy Neck Beach as runners arrived on Saturday morning, Jan. 12, and made their way from the cozy confines of the Snack Shop down to the starting line on the sand.
The blue sky, lack of snow, and seaside location may have hinted that it was a warm day, but that was far from the case. The Cape Cod Frozen Fat Ass 50K has had its share of diverse weather during its first 12 years, ranging from warm temperatures and sunny skies, to rain and snow. The 13th edition of the race in Barnstable, Mass., was no different. The sun was a disguise for the 20-degree temperature and strong wind gusts that froze the runners to their core. MassUltra Roundup: HURT 100 and Crystal Springs 50K
More than 200 ultrarunners – most of them from New England – are counting down the days until the inaugural TARCtic Frozen Yeti 30-hour ultra and 15-mile races. Two weeks before taking on what are anticipated to be frigid conditions in the Bay State, a few local runners sought refuge on the trails in much warmer climates. For Ryan Fecteau of Danvers, Mass., that meant heading to Hawaii for the HURT 100. Meanwhile, Lynnfield, Mass., resident Dan Kelley headed back to sunny California for another successful race. The 13th annual Cape Cod Frozen Fat Ass 50K took place Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, on Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable, Mass. MassUltra Roundup: San Diego 50, Steep Ravine, Avalon, and Recover from the Holidays
The cold of winter is starting to unleash its bite in the Northeast. That hasn’t stopped ultrarunners from Massachusetts and greater New England from taking to the trails. One must look no further than Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable, Mass., where the Cape Cod Frozen Fat Ass 50K took place last weekend (separate story in the works). Another local runner traveled to nearby New York on Sunday to run in the annual Recover from the Holidays 50K. Several more runners from the Bay State sought out warmer weather by flying west to California where they took part in a trio of ultras: the San Diego 50, the Steep Ravine 50K, and the Avalon Benefit 50-miler. Little Rain, Lot of Good Times at 20th Annual G.A.C. Fat Ass 50
TOPSFIELD, Mass. – A thunderstorm inched closer to Topsfield during the morning hours on Saturday, Jan. 5, creating an ominous sky above and around Bradley Palmer State Park.
Runners coming to the G.A.C. Fat Ass 50 from the north and south drove through spurts of steady precipitation. Upon arrival at the park, however, they experienced reprieve from the rain. Radar showed that the storm that for hours had barreled toward the park split as it neared the Topsfield town border.
