Most of the trail- and ultrarunning world spent the June 26-28 weekend focused on the Western States Endurance Run in California, but here in New England there was plenty of ultra action taking place. In Massachusetts, the Moonwacker 12-hour All-Night Trail Race took place in Wrentham, though results from the run are unavailable. Additionally, a pair of ultras were held in Connecticut with the Centurion Ultra Trail Event and the Brooksvale 12-Hour Run. Results from Brooksvale were also unavailable as of the time of publication. Here in this week’s roundup we catch up on the action at Centurion, as well as New Englanders’ performances at a few races in the West, from the Black Hills 100 and the Copper Kings 100 to the Wy’East Wonder Ultras. New Englanders’ results from Western States will be included in a separate recap, but there is plenty to read in this edition of the roundup.
Centurion Ultra Trail Event
Forty runners took part in the sixth edition of the Centurion Ultra Trail Event and 15 completed 100 miles or more on the 2.5-mile loop course within the 33-hour time limit on June 27-28 at the Roosevelt Forest in Stratford, Conn. That included 27-year-old Evan Titus of Norwalk, Conn., who led all runners and set a new male course record with 130 miles. David Stawski, 44, of Manchester, Conn., was second with 110 miles, and top female Danielle Keahon, 41, of Pearl River, N.Y., was third with 102.5 miles. Martin Mitchell, 34, of Pascoag, R.I., was fourth overall and the third-place male with 100 miles in 22:40:37. Catherine Walsh, 49, of Bethany, Conn., and Jennifer Mattingly, 49, of Bloomsbury, N.J., joined Keahon on the female podium with 100 miles apiece, Walsh in 28:50:40 and Mattingly in 30:35:52.
Black Hills 100
Several New Englanders took part in the Western States Endurance Run during the June 26-27 weekend, but it wasn’t the only long-running 100-miler traditionally held on the same weekend. The Black Hills 100 held its 15th edition in Sturgis, S.D., and the out-and-back course–which actually measures closer to 108 miles–once again proved to be a mighty challenge with remote trails, mountains and nearly 17,000 feet of climbing.
Of the 129 runners who started the race, just 58–less than half–ultimately finished. Two New Englanders were among them. Jack Small, 38, of Durham, Conn., earned his first 100-mile finish, placing 19th overall in 30:17:20, while 27-year-old Eojin Kim of Somerville, Mass., placed 24th in 30:42:39. Jeremy Pratt, 36, of Sioux Falls, S.D., led all runners in 22:12:23 and was the lone sub-24-hour finisher. Eleanor Willkie, 24, of Brookings, S.D., topped the female field and placed 10th overall in 27:46:39.
Copper Kings 100
Jason Inglis earned his first 100-mile finish, and it didn’t come easy. Inglis, 40, of Wolfeboro, N.H., took part in the fourth annual Copper Kings 100 on June 26-27 in Butte, Mont. Inglis and his fellow runners had to overcome altitude–the starting line is at 5,650 feet and the course tops out at 8,400 feet–as well as nearly 14,000 feet of climbing.
Of the 143 runners who started the race, 115 finished within 39 hours. Inglis was among them, placing 78th overall in 34:10:29. The top 12 runners finished in less than 24 hours, led by 39-year-old Adam Behrendt, 39, of Bozeman, Mont., in a course record-setting 17:49:01. Sixth overall finisher Kallie Smith, 40, of Missoula, Mont., set a new female course record with her 21:39:11 performance.
Wy’East Wonder
A pair of Massachusetts men officially became ultrarunners at the eighth edition of the Wy’East Wonder Ultras on Saturday, June 27, in Parkdale, Ore.
The event offered a pair of net downhill, point-to-point ultras on the trails on and around Mt. Hood, giving runners an option between a 50K with 4,000 feet of climbing and 7,000 feet of downhill, or a 50-miler with 7,000 feet of climbing and 10,000 feet of downhill. Caleb Bradshaw, 20, and Nolan Smith, 20, both of Newburyport, Mass., both opted for the 50K for their first ultra.
Bradshaw and Nolan ran together and finished together, Bradshaw in 5:56:39 and Smith a second behind in 5:56:39, placing 24th and 25th out of 171 finishers within the 11-hour time limit. They weren’t the only New Englanders in the field. Jillian Genereux, 33, and Jake Genereux, 31, both of Pembroke, N.H., also ran and finished together, Jillian in 121st place in 7:50:21 and Jake in 122nd place in 7:50:22.
Leif Van Acker, 31, and Ally Bray, 33, both of Portland, Ore., finished 1-3 overall and topped the male and female fields in 4:44:48 and 4:48:02, respectively. Morgan Trapp, 32, of McMinnville, Ore., led the nonbinary field in 7:19:46.
No New Englanders were among the 83 finishers of the event’s 50-mile race.
*Editor’s Note: Results are found on a variety of sites, including ultrasignup.com, UltraRunning Magazine, and official race websites. We do the best we can to find as many results as possible to report on and recognize the local ultrarunning community.
