After holding out hope for several months that it could take place as an in-person race, the East End Trail Races are going virtual according to the event’s registration page on UltraSignup.
A formal announcement has not yet been made on the Northeast Race Management website or Facebook page, though the banner on the event’s registration page on UltraSignup was changed to indicate it is now a virtual race. Registration remains open.
Originally slated to take place on Aug. 2 at Borderland State Park in Easton, Mass., with a 50K ultramarathon along with 30K and 10K races, runners entered in the third annual event will now experience the first – and hopefully not annual – virtual edition of the race.
The last official in-person ultramarathon in Massachusetts was the Trail Animals Running Club’s TARCtic Frozen Yeti 30-Hour Ultra on Feb. 1-2 at Hale Reservation in Weston. A dozen ultras in the state have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic while several others were postponed or converted to virtual events.
The next potential in-person ultra in the state is a new event, the Running Below the Noise 12-Hour/6-Hour on Sept. 20 in Yarmouth Port. Additionally, the TARC Fall Classic on Oct. 3 at Great Brook Farm State Park in Carlisle is still scheduled to be an in-person race, though that is subject to change as the pandemic continues.
