Quincy’s Damon is Last Woman Standing at “Last Man Standing” Ultramarathon
The inaugural Last Man Standing Ultramarathon was a battle of attrition Saturday, Sept. 3, at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine, as 111 runners toed the starting line of the approximately 4.2-mile loop course … and then they toed it again … and again … and again … on the hour, every hour, until no runner could complete the loop within the hour allotted for each loop.
Jason Bigonia, 39, of Walpole, Maine, was the last man standing as he completed 17 loops of the course. He edged Kenneth Parnow, 29, of Portland, Maine, who finished second with 16 completed loops.
The last woman standing – and tied for third-last runner standing – was Amy Damon of Quincy, Mass. Damon, 29, completed 15 loops of the course, as did Matthew Burrell, 30, of Columbia, Conn., and Brian Speier, 34, of Freeport, Maine.
A few more Massachusetts residents were in the hunt for most loops. Mike Penta, 48, of North Attleboro, Mass., finished 12 loops, and James Gawle, 65, of Webster, Mass., finished 11 loops.
Additionally, Jason York, 41, of Andover, Mass., finished nine loops.
Six Bay State residents – Lee Dickey, 62, of Dracut, Mass.; Keri Stanovich, 38, of Mansfield, Mass.; Kyle Northrop, 23, of Bellingham, Mass.; Katherine Kulig, 38, of Melrose, Mass.; Linnea Laverty, 30, of Lynn, Mass.; and Lauren Farkash, 47, of Plainville, Mass. – all ran farther than a 50K as they completed eight loops of the course.
Two other runners – 46-year-old Charles Williams of Hingham, Mass., and 23-year-old Mitchell Saeger of Upton, Mass. – finished seven loops and ran almost 30 miles.
