Year No. 2 of the Berkshire Ultra Running Community for Service’s BURCS Summer Fat Ass 6-Hour Run saw a massive surge in participation, as well as some stellar running performances on Saturday, July 9 at Notchview Reservation in Windsor, Mass.

Participation more than doubled in the event’s second year, surging from 13 participants in 2015 to 33 runners hailing from seven states in 2016. Of the more than three-dozen runners, 12 ran farther than a marathon.

One of the race’s new faces, Diane Keenan, was both the women’s champion and overall champion. The 35-year-old from Wallingford, Conn., circled the 1.8-mile loop course 19 times and tallied 34.2 miles during the six-hour event. The victory was the latest strong performance from Keenan, following up a fourth-place overall showing at the Jack Bristol Lake Waramaug 50K in April in New Preston, Conn., and runner-up showing at last fall’s Ghost Train 60-Mile race in Brookline, N.H. Keenan will return to Ghost Train this fall as a competitor in the 100-mile race.

The top two men’s finishers placed second and third overall as Justin Heinz, 24, of Albany, N.Y., recorded 32.3 miles, and Bennjamin Griffin, 30, of Pittsfield, Mass., logged 30.4 miles. Second-place female Ann Alessandrini, 56, of Johnsonville, N.Y., joined Griffin in recording 30.4 miles.

A trio of runners – Jennifer Bell, 50, of Dalton, Mass.; Kenneth Wilson, 54, of Pittsfield, Mass.; and Ana Wolf, 44, of Cummington, Mass. – all completed 28.5 miles. Five others ran 26.6 miles, surpassing the marathon distance by nearly a half-mile.

The Summer Fat Ass is just the latest in a busy stretch of events for BURCS. The group is playing host to the BURCS Race Series, which consists of three ultramarathon events. The first, the Vegan Power 50K, took place June 17. The second leg of the series is the Sweltering Summer 8-Hour Run on Saturday, Aug. 6, in Pittsfield, Mass., followed by the Free To Run Trail 50-Miler on Sept. 17 in Pittsfield. Finishers of all three ultras will receive a belt buckle.

Registration for Sweltering Summer closes July 31.
