One of Massachusetts’ longest-running ultramarathon events will not take place in 2016.
The Somerville Road Runners’ Ultra Around the Lake, an endurance run with 24-hour, 12-hour, marathon, and relay options, canceled what would have been the 19th annual event. Event organizers made the announcement on the event website, as well as on its Facebook page.
“This was a difficult decision for our race committee but we were not successful in securing a location for this year after many attempts,” they wrote. “The safety and convenience of you, our runners, is our top priority and we cannot stage an event without a secure location and the town of Wakefield’s permission. With only a few months left, we do not have enough time to put forth a good event like last year.”
The course has evolved over time, with the 2014 and 2015 races taking place on a 5.106-kilometer loop around Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield, Mass.
The summertime event had taken place each year since its inaugural running in 1998.
Event organizers plan to bring back the event in 2017.
