The size of the field has grown considerably, weather conditions have varied, and competition has stiffened. Still, one thing has remained consistent throughout all of the change during the past eight years of The North Face Endurance Challenge – New York: Brian Rusiecki is always in the hunt.

Rusiecki has raced the 50-miler at Bear Mountain State Park every year since 2009, and every year he has finished in the top five. That includes Saturday, April 30, when the 37-year-old from South Deerfield, Mass., battled to a second-place finish out of 330 finishers.

The runner-up finish was the third for Rusiecki at Bear Mountain. His first runner-up finish came during his first running of the race when there were just 72 finishers. His lone victory came in 2015. Rusiecki’s time of 7:11:51 this year marked his fastest ever on the course, however, and was five minutes faster than his winning time the year before.

Ryan Atkins, 28, of Caledon, Ontario, Canada, was the overall champion in 7:09:16. David Le Porho, 38, of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, joined Atkins and Rusiecki on the podium with a third-place finish in 7:21:28.

Five of the top six overall finishers were Canadians, but three of the top 10 hailed from Massachusetts. In addition to Rusiecki, Joseph McConaughy, 24, of Boston placed seventh overall in 7:44:00, and Charles Joyal, 46, of Feeding Hills finished ninth in 7:48:49.

Turnbull is Top Bay-Stater at Bear Mountain 50K

Less than a minute separated Matt Turnbull from a podium finish in the 50K race in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains at The North Face Endurance Challenge – New York. Turnbull, 37, of Watertown, Mass., finished fourth overall in 4:28:25, just 50 seconds out of the top three.

Samuel Gray, 20, of North Hampton, N.H., won the race in 3:59:39; Silas Carey, 28, of New York, N.Y., was second in 4:18:46; and Dan Gay, 40, of New York, N.Y., fended off Turnbull for third in 4:27:35.

Two other Massachusetts ultrarunners joined Turnbull in the top 10. Christopher Pothier, 29, of Northborough, placed eighth overall in 4:42:19, seven minutes ahead of Will Swenson, 44, of Andover, who finished ninth in 4:49:18. For Swenson, the performance marked his first big race since taking fourth overall at the Rocky Raccoon 100-miler in February in Huntsville, Texas.

A total of 465 runners completed the 50K race.
