MA Runners Conquer Winter Beast

With beast in the name, it isn’t supposed to be easy.

The same goes for the winter part.

Despite snow-covered trail, freezing temperatures and a strong wind, 18 runners completed the Beast of Burden Winter 100-miler Jan. 23-24 in Lockport, NY, and 42 runners completed the 50-miler.

Included among the 100-mile finishers was 28-year-old Michael Condella of Revere, Mass., who placed 11th overall in 25 hours, 50 minutes, 2 seconds, well below the 30-hour time limit. Ryan Jones, 36, of Morrisville, Penn., was the overall champion in 16:37:14.

Three Bay State residents were among the 50-mile finishers, led by Justin Fitzgerald, 32, of Malden, Mass., who placed 14th overall in 9:51:59. Jeffrey Adams, 37, of Buffalo, NY, won the race in 7:05:57. Also from Massachusetts, Craig Coffey, 45, of Cohasset, finished 17th in 10:38:22, and John Cochenour, 33, of Boston was 36th in 13:58:25.
