At least 22 ultramarathons took place in the United States last weekend, and at least three of them included runners from Massachusetts. ‘The Trails Are Free’ Brings TARC, Ultrarunning Culture to the Big Screen
Lindsey Topham didn’t have filmmaking on her mind when she first connected with the Trail Animals Running Club in 2009. Instead, the Boston University graduate student was looking to photograph ultrarunners for a multimedia assignment. Additionally, having recently moved to Massachusetts from California, she hoped to make some new friends who could introduce her to the local trails.
Nearly eight years later, there is excitement in Topham’s voice as she reflects on her early interactions with TARC, how her connection to the organization blossomed both behind the camera and as a runner, and where her journey ultimately led. MassUltra Roundup: Moab, Everglades, Febapple, and Black Canyon
Massachusetts residents Colton Gale and William Rainey Johnson blazed to strong finishes at in Utah at the Moab Red Hot 55K, and Somerville speedster Tim Harder delivered a second-place finish at the Everglades Ultra to leadoff this week’s roundup. MassUltra Roundup: Holiday Lake, Sean O’Brien, Rocky 50 and Golden Gate
The Massachusetts impact was strong at the Holiday Lake 50K++ as Jake Dissinger and Amy Rusiecki delivered strong early-season performances in Virginia. Gregoria Arambula earned a finish at the Rocky 50K in Texas, and Brittany Ames – fresh off the Across the Years 72-Hour event – headed back west for the Golden Gate 50K in California. Additionally, a week earlier Dima Feinhaus completed the Sean O’Brien 100K more than an hour faster than in 2016 while Russ Dresher and Karen Ringheiser completed the 50K in the California event. Familiar Faces and Elements at Cape Cod Frozen Fat Ass
Some things never change about the Cape Cod Ultrarunning Society’s annual Cape Cod Frozen Fat Ass run.
Fred Murolo is always there – the 60-year-old from Cheshire, Conn., is the only person to finish the 50K all 11 years – and it’s always cold. The specificity of the “cold” sometimes varies. There may be rain, snow, and temperatures ranging from the frigid single digits to the more manageable 40s, but the wind along the Cape ensures it’s always bone-chilling cold. MassUltra Roundup: Winter Beast of Burden
Justin Fitzgerald used the 2016 Winter Beast of Burden 50-miler to jumpstart what proved to be a strong year of ultrarunning. The resident of Malden, Mass., completed at least eight ultras in 2016 – including the Ghost Train 100-miler in October in Brookline, N.H.
