May and June were shaping up to be hectic months in the Pietari home in Brighton, Mass.
Kyle Pietari, 29, was about to graduate from Harvard Law, studying for the Patent Bar Exam, training for the mid-August Leadville Trail 100, and preparing to move to Colorado with his wife, Stacy, and their two children.
The center of the ultrarunning universe was in Squaw Valley and Auburn, Calif., on June 25-26 as 353 runners tested their luck and endurance on the historic trails of the Western States 100.
The Salomon Trail Running Festival at Pineland Farms attracted runners from throughout New England to New Gloucester, Maine, but many of the speediest runners in the ultramarathon distances had one thing in common: they hailed from Massachusetts. The folks in Georgia aren’t joking around when they call it “cruel.”
The Cruel Jewel 100 actually measures 105.9 miles through the Chattahoochee National Forest in northern Georgia. Along the way, 33,000 feet of vertical gain are sprinkled in – oftentimes through thick humidity or whatever else Mother Nature chooses to throw at the runners.
