MassUltra Roundup: Javelina Jundred and Autumn Leaves

Javelina Jundred

It was a scorching weekend in the desert Oct. 29-30 in Fountain Hills, Ariz., with temperatures that hit triple-digits and plenty of sun beating down to cook the ground. It’s not a stretch of the imagination to assume ultrarunners contributed to that late-October heat, however, given the number of scorching performances turned in at the Javelina Jundred, a 100-mile and 100-kilometer race. MassUltra Roundup: Pony Express, Bimblers Bluff, Elk-Kings, and Goatz

A large crop of Bay State residents journeyed a few strides beyond the state border into New Hampshire last weekend for the Ghost Train Rail Trail Races. Results of that event are still being finalized, so we will highlight it in a separate article later this week. Not everyone went north to race, however. A handful of Massachusetts residents headed elsewhere to take on ultramarathon challenges, and we have included four of those events in this week’s roundup. MassUltra Roundup: Bigfoot, Farm to Farm, Tesla Hertz, Oil Creek, and Water Gap

While the largest cropping of Massachusetts ultrarunners spent the weekend of Oct. 8-9 racing or volunteering at the TARC 100 ultrarunning festival in Westwood, Mass., (see additional TARC 100 coverage on MassUltra.com), a handful of Bay State residents scattered throughout the country to tackle other ultras. We’ve included five of them in this week’s roundup. If we’ve missed your event (here’s looking at you, Grindstone), don’t worry, we’ll include it next week. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Bigfoot, Farm to Farm, Tesla Hertz, Oil Creek, and Water Gap

MassUltra Roundup: Mogollon Monster, Run Rabbit Run, Barkley Fall Classic, Pisgah, Boulder Field, TNFEC, and Coastal

Massachusetts ultrarunners were all over the map last weekend, from the Southwest, to the Northeast, and America’s heartland. They even ran right here at home – although that will be covered in a separate article. MassUltra Roundup: Last Man Standing, and Jay Peak

Quincy’s Damon is Last Woman Standing at “Last Man Standing” Ultramarathon

The inaugural Last Man Standing Ultramarathon was a battle of attrition Saturday, Sept. 3, at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine, as 111 runners toed the starting line of the approximately 4.2-mile loop course … and then they toed it again … and again … and again … on the hour, every hour, until no runner could complete the loop within the hour allotted for each loop. Rusieckis, Fourcade Complete UTMB

The 2016 Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) was one of the hottest and most grueling on record, with more than 40 percent of the starting field falling by the wayside by the time the 46 1/2-hour time limit had expired.

Nearly 1,800 runners toed the starting line in Chamonix, France, and more than 730 dropped along the 170-kilometer (105.6-mile) course. Of the 1,468 runners who reached the finish line after conquering more than 32,000 feet of vertical gain and temperatures in the upper 80s, three finishers hailed from Massachusetts.
