The June 14-16 weekend included another jam-packed slate of ultramarathons, and New Englanders took to the trails from coast to coast. Runners from the region did so much racing that the weekend merits two roundups. We’ll finish in the East, where results are still coming in from the Brooksvale 12-hour in Connecticut, and runners also raced in West Virginia and Florida, but we start in the West where veterans and first-time ultrarunners alike took on races in Wyoming, Oregon, Arizona and Utah. Additionally, a handful of New Englanders took on the Tahoe 200, but final results were not posted at the time of publication.

New England made its mark on the West Coast during the June 7-9 weekend. Rachel Bainbridge of Concord, Mass., earned a spot on the podium at the McKenzie River Trail Run 50K in Oregon; Scott Traer of Woburn, Mass., was victorious at the Malibu Canyon 50-miler in California; and Cordon Louco of Wenham, Mass., took top honors in his ultramarathon debut in Oregon. Those big performances highlight this edition of the roundup.

A jam-packed June 7-9 weekend saw ultrarunners from New England take on at least eight events nationwide, from the low-key, high-fun Drummer Hill 50K in New Hampshire, to a slew of ultras around the country. We’ll catch up on results from events in the West in a second roundup, but here in Part I we focus on ultras in the East, ranging from the Kettle Moraine 100 in Wisconsin, to the OSS/CIA 50 in Virginia, to the Bethel Hill Moonlight Boogie in North Carolina, as well as Merrill’s Mile in Georgia and Laurel Highlands in Pennsylvania. But we start off close to home with Drummer Hill to kick off a lengthy edition of the roundup.

June opened with International Trails Day, and ultrarunners from New England celebrated by racing locally – at the Chesterfield Gorge Ultra in Massachusetts (separate recap article), the Last Human Standing event in Rhode Island (results unavailable at time of publication), and the seventh edition of the Connecticut Ultra Traverse, where Justin Kousky delivered his latest course-record performance. Additionally, some runners stayed in the Northeast to race the Cayuga Trails 50, while others ventured to Virginia for the Old Dominion 100 and Dam Yeti 50, Pennsylvania for the grueling Worlds End 100K and 50K, down to South Carolina for the Hell Hole Hundred, and out West to Alaska. We have it all covered in this jam-packed edition of the roundup.

Memorial Day weekend was relatively quiet on the ultrarunning scene nationwide with just a handful of events, including the final days of Infinitus in Vermont and the Trail Festival at Pineland Farms in Maine. Given the limited number of ultras available, Framingham resident Ryan Fecteau picked up the extra mileage for everyone as he closed out his 888K performance at Infinitus. That massive effort leads off this edition of the roundup.

In Part I of the May 17-19 weekend roundup we focused on results at ultras in the Northeast. Here in Part 2, we turn to the rest of the country. New Englanders had big performances from coast to coast, but nobody threw down harder than Rhode Island resident Ben Quatromoni who smashed the course record at the grueling Cruel Jewel 100-miler in Georgia. From there we turn to Virginia and the Massanutten Mountain Trails 100, and then stop off in North Carolina before heading West to Utah, Colorado, and California.

Mid-May stayed red hot for ultrarunning in New England. Here in Massachusetts, the second annual Free Spirit 50K welcomed runners to Leyden, and two more runners – 22-year-old Lukas Janulaitis of Manchester, N.H (12:11:46) and David Marsh, 21, of Marstons Mills, Mass. (19:07:00) – completed the Cape Cod Race Against the Tides unsanctioned solo run. Beyond the Bay State, runners took on the grueling Manchester 2 Monadnock 55-miler in New Hampshire and the Run Ragged Last Person Standing event in Connecticut, which saw Sarah Connor outlast everyone. We catch up on both of those events, as well as a pair of New Jersey ultras – Mayapple and 3 Days at the Fair – in Part I of the roundup from the May 17-19 weekend. In Part 2, we will venture outside of the Northeast, where runners from the region took on at least seven other ultras across the country.

While the Watuppa Trail Races and Wapack and Back brought many ultrarunners to the starting lines in Massachusetts during the May 10-12 weekend, there were also large gatherings in Maine and Vermont as runners took on 100 miles at Maine’s Androscoggin Riverlands State Park, or 100-mile, 50-mile and 50K distances in the Green Mountain foothills. We catch up on both of those events in this edition of the roundup.

There was plenty of ultramarathon action throughout New England during the May 10-12 weekend, from the Watuppa Trail Races and Wapack and Back here in Massachusetts, to the Riverlands 100 in Maine and Blood Root Ultra in Vermont. Even with all of those opportunities close to home, several runners from the region scattered throughout the country to take on a variety of ultra challenges. You can read about Watuppa and Wapack in their own separate articles, and we’ll catch up on Riverlands and Blood Root in a separate roundup, but in this edition we catch up on those non-New England events in Arizona, Oregon, Alabama, Washington, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Although there was plenty of ultramarathon action in the New England region during the May 3-5 weekend, several runners also found success on the trails across the country. In Part 2 of this week’s roundup, we look outside of New England and catch up on ultras in Virginia, Tennessee, and California. But we start in Oregon, where Jonathan McInerney battled to victory at a West Coast classic.
