MassUltra Roundup: June 5-7 Weekend

Summer hasn’t officially arrived in New England yet, but it felt like it during the first weekend of June for ultrarunners from the region who took on the Connecticut Ultra Traverse. In addition to that event, runners from the region traveled all across the country to race, and a few earned podium finishes, including Shae Regan at the Great Divide Ultra in Colorado and Samuel Couture at the Malibu Canyon 50K in California. We have all of that covered–and more–in this edition of the roundup.

Connecticut Ultra Traverse (CUT)

The eighth edition of the Connecticut Ultra Traverse, or CUT, took place on June 5-6, and took nearly 20 runners on a journey half way or all the way across the state. The CUT featured two point-to-point races, with a 112-miler starting in Southwick, Mass., and traversing Connecticut from north to south before finishing at Long Island Sound in Guilford, Conn., as well as a 50-miler that covered the final 50 miles of the route.

Fourteen runners gathered in Soutwick to attempt the full crossing, and just six ultimately were successful in making it to the finish. Jeff Sullivan, 36, of Manchester, Conn., earned the victory in 32:19:05, followed nearly two hours later by 55-year-old Michael Lo Presti of Norfolk, Conn., in 34:14:11. Additional finishers were Matt Twitchell, 37, of Windsor Locks, Conn. (35:30:09); Benny Danaher, 45, of Wilder, Vt. (36:03:29); Nicolas Nieto, 25, of New York, N.Y. (39:24:30); and Freddie Klies, 37, of Wolcott, Conn. (43:52:21).

An additional five runners attempted the CUT 50-miler, and four finished. Cole Crosby, 37, of Cranston, R.I., led the field in a speedy 10:37:52 and clocked the second-fastest time in course history. Top female Jayme Dubinsky, 42, of Richmond, Va., was second overall on 20:11:51, followed by Celeste Fong, 50, of Middletown, Conn., and Marcus Pointer who finished together in 21:21:39.

The Great Divide Ultra

Shae Regan has quietly built an impressive ultrarunning resume just two years into her participation in the sport. The 22-year-old from Littleton, Mass., made her ultra debut in January 2025 with a third-place finish at the San Tan Scramble 50K in Arizona. She then won the Malibu Canyon 50K outright in June 2025. Regan earned her third ultra finish – and third ultra podium finish – at the fifth annual Great Divide Ultra 100-mile, 100K, and 50K races on June 6-7 in Divide, Colo. The event offered three separate 50K races, and Regan took part in the Saturday 50K race. Of the 59 runners who started, 52, ultimately finished. Regan placed third overall and first in the female field in 5:16:16. Regan’s closest competitor, 31-year-old Hannah Haylett of Fort Collins, Colo., followed more than an hour behind in 6:23:42. Regan was one of two New Englanders among the finishers. Debbie Reppucci, 47, of Wilmington, Mass., completed the race in 11:03:34. Male champion Ryan Haylett, 35, of Fort Collins, Colo., led all runners in 4:31:09, followed by John Jurgens, 31, of Colorado Springs, Colo., in 4:53:05.

No New England residents were among the 22 finishers of the 100-miler or 27 finishers of the 100K.

Malibu Canyon Trail Races

Samuel Couture traveled cross-country to race at the fifth annual Malibu Canyon Trail Races on Saturday, June 6, at Point Mugu State Park in Malbu, Calif., and he returned home as a podium finisher. The event offered 100K, 50-mile and 50K ultras, and Couture opted for the 50K distance. The 26-year-old from Essex, Vt., raced among the front-runners throughout and finished third overall in 4:43:38. Ninety-seven runners finished within 11 hours, led by 34-year-old Cory Fleming of Los Angeles, Calif., in 3:50:32, and Brock Becker, 33, of Ventura, Calif., in 4:37:58. Top female Christine Kerrest, 45, of Carlsbad, Calif., placed eighth overall in 5:23:50.

Couture was one of two New Englanders in the 50K field. Olivia Carrick, 51, of Westwood, Mass., placed 68th overall and 14th in the female field in 8:03:46. The race was part of her build-up to the Tahoe Rim Trail 100K in July and the Rim to River 100-miler in October.

No New Englanders were among the 50 finishers of the 100K or the 75 finishers of the 50-mile race.

PCT 50

Derek Kachadurian had a happy homecoming to California. Kachadurian, 34, of Truro, Mass., recently moved to the Bay State from La Jolla, Calif., and he amassed a large resume of ultramarathon finishes while living on the West Coast, including runner-up finishes at the Pirate’s Cove 6-hour and The Peak 50K. Kachadurian returned for the 22nd edition of the PCT 50 on Saturday, June 6, in San Diego County, Calif. The 50-mile race took place on an out-and-back course on the Pacific Crest Trail, and Kachadurian had a strong day of racing. Of the 144 runners who started the race, 104 finished within 15 hours. Kachadurian was among the fastest and nearly snagged a place on the podium but ultimately finished fourth overall in 9:06:09.

Ivan Estrella, 30, of Tucson, Ariz., dominated the field and won by 71 minutes in 7:21:40. Todd Henderson, 37, of Encinitas, Calif., was a distant second in 8:32:33, followed by 51-year-old Thomas Tomaszewski of Coronado, Calif., in 8:58:25. Jian Springer, 55, of Woodland Hills, Calif., was the first-place female in 10:17:45.

Old Dominion 100

Charles Morris kicked off his pursuit of the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning with a successful finish at the 46th running of the Old Dominion 100 on June 6-7 in Fort Valley, Va. One of the sport’s earliest 100-milers, the race took place on trails and dirt roads with around 14,000 feet of climbing.

Morris, 32, of Lee, N.H., finished 60th overall in 27:36:01, one of 63 runners to beat the 28-hour cutoff. Olivier Leblond, 54, of Arlington, Va., led all runners in 17:33:28, fending off Siqi Wu, 35, of Bloomington, Ind., by less than nine minutes. Wu was the runner-up in 17:42:00. Tatiana Rypinski, 33, of Houston, Texas, topped the female field and placed ninth overall in 20:40:29.

To complete the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning, Morris must complete four of the sport’s oldest 100-milers in a single year. Morris will next take on the Vermont 100 in July, followed by the Leadville Trail 100 in August and the Wasatch Front 100-miler in September.

Rose Canyon Ultra

Jeff Milner has done plenty of racing in the west during the past few years, including the Snow Peaks 50-miler, Behind the Rocks Ultra 50-miler and Bears Ears Ultra 50-miler in Utah, and the Pikes Peak Ultra 50-miler in Colorado. For his latest adventure in the region, Milner returned to Utah to take part in the third annual Rose Canyon Ultra 50-mile and 50K races on Saturday, June 6, in Herriman, Utah. The races took place on the trails of Butterfield Trailhead Regional Park, Butterfield Canyon and Rose and Yellow Fork Canyons.

Milner opted for the 50-mile option and was one of 47 runners who attempted the distance. His experience paid off as the 55-year-old from Andover, Mass., ran strong throughout the day and finished sixth overall in 11:36:40. Jesse Rich, 36, of Murray, Utah, led all runners in 8:43:36, winning by well over 90 minutes. Katherine Hauska, 36, of Draper, Utah, topped the female field and placed seventh overall in 12:22:32. Thirty-three runners completed the race within 16 hours.

No New England residents took part in the 50K race, which has 77 finishers within 10 1/2 hours.

Dam Yeti 50

Three New England residents were among the finishers of the ninth annual Dam Yeti 50-mile and 55K races on Saturday, June 6, in Abingdon, Va. Both races took place on point-to-point courses on the Virginia Creeper Trail.

Seth Popinchalk, 49, of Worcester, Mass., was among the 157 finishers of the 50-mile race. He placed 59th overall in 9:38:02 for his second official ultramarathon finish and first 50-miler. Michael brinkman, 29, of Pisgah Forest, N.C., and Leigh Campbell, 42, of Durham, N.C., finished 1-2 overall and were the male and female champions in 6:10:33 and 6:19:54, respectively.

An additional 203 runners completed the 55K race, led by 30-year-old Tyler Haar of Signal Mountain, Tenn., and 30-year-old Therese Howe of Baltimore, Md., who led the male and female fields and placed 1-2 overall in 4:09:29 and 4:30:03, respectively. Two New Englanders were among the finishers. Stephen Sarnelle, 40, of Stamford, Conn., placed 44th in 7:01:11, and Reto Meier, 63, of Watertown, Conn., finished 50th in 7:04:04.
