Rock Hard Marathon Evolves into Freetown 50K for 2017

The Rock Hard Marathon lived up to its gritty name during its three-year run from 2014-2016 at the Freetown-Fall River State Forest in Assonet, Mass., challenging runners with plenty of singletrack and rocks with some tough hills thrown in for good measure.

MassUltra Roundup: Umstead, Naked Prussian, Georgia Death Race, New Jersey, and the Run4Water

April 1-2 was a busy weekend for ultramarathons nationwide, and plenty of Massachusetts runners stepped to the starting line at out-of-state events. Five races made this week’s roundup, and others may be rolled into next week’s roundup as results and details are still coming in.

This week, Natick’s Matthew Knights made his 100-mile debut with a speedy performance at Umstead and 100-mile veteran Adena Schutzberg of Somerville also snagged a buckle; South Deerfield’s Brian Rusiecki returned to the top of the podium with a victory at the Naked Prussian; Quincy’s Greg Soutiea threw down more than 120 miles at the Run4Water; and Bay State residents also secured hard-earned finishes at the Georgia Death Race and the New Jersey Ultra Festival. 6 Hours of Slush, Ice and Snow Usher in New TARC Season

WESTWOOD, Mass. – A light drizzle pelted around 100 runners gathered in front of Powissett Lodge a few minutes before 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 25. A feeling of anxiety filled the air as they listened to race director Josh Katzman’s final instructions prior to the start of To Hale and Back, the six-hour trail ultramarathon that officially kicked off the Trail Animals Running Club’s new season.

MassUltra Roundup: Ruck A Chuck, Antelope Island, Chuckanut and Mesquite Canyon

Massachusetts ultrarunners headed west last weekend and were among the fastest at the Ruck A Chuck 50K and the Antelope Island Buffalo Run 50-miler. Additionally, a recent Bay State resident delivered a strong showing at the Mesquite Canyon 50 in Arizona. MassUltra Roundup: Hashawha Hills, Antelope Canyon, and the Post Oak Lodge Challenge

At least 22 ultramarathons took place in the United States last weekend, and at least three of them included runners from Massachusetts. Those races – the Hashawha Hills 50K in Maryland, the Antelope Canyon 50-miler in Arizona, and the Post Oak Lodge 50K in Oklahoma – are featured in this week’s roundup.
