WINDSOR, Mass. – For most of the weekend, Ann Alessandrini was an unstoppable force.
From the moment she started the 72-hour race at the Notchview Ultra at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 4, until her final dash through the field and across the finish line three days later, Alessandrini captured the imagination of her fellow ultrarunners who marveled at her speed, her endurance and – perhaps above all else – her grit. Notchview Reservation in Windsor, Mass., was the scene for most New England ultrarunners who spent Fourth of July weekend racing. That said, a handful headed beyond the Bay State to race, be it in nearby New York for the classic Finger Lakes 50s, the upper Midwest where Boston’s Lance Doherty earned a top-10 finish at the Afton Trail 50K in Minnesota, California at the Angeles National Forest, or Colorado where runners took on 50-milers in Leadville and Fairplay. We’ve got them all covered in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Afton, Finger Lakes, Silver Rush, ANF, and Last Call→

WINDSOR, Mass. – What started as a 6-hour event in 2015 known as the BURCS Summer Fat Ass soon grew into a 24-hour race. In 2019, it morphed into a massive multi-day event rebranded as the Notchview Ultra, offering runners the opportunity to tackle a 1.9-mile trail loop for 72, 48, 24, 12, 6 or 3 hours from July 4-7 at Notchview Reservation. The following are a sample of photos from the weekend. A full photo gallery can be found on the MassUltra Facebook page. Continue reading Photos: Notchview Ultra→
All eyes were on the Western States Endurance Run last weekend – well, almost all eyes. Some were focused on the trail of Roosevelt Forest in Stratford, Conn., where 68 runners took part in the 30-Hour Forbidden Forest Ultra, including 12 runners who finished more than 100 miles. In addition to that race, we also recap two out-of-state ultras from June 22-23 – the Great New York 100-Mile Running Exposition where Sheffield, Mass., resident John Kemp finished on the podium, and the inaugural Mountain Lakes Backyard Ultra in New York. That makes for some light reading as we’ve recapped the performances of New England runners at Western States in a separate write-up. Seven New England residents and two former Bay Staters took part in a wild weekend at the 46th annual Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run. The former residents had fine days – former Boston resident Kyle Pietari, 32, now of Edgewater, Colo., earned his fourth straight top-10 finish, placing 10th overall in 15:56:15, and former Hudson resident Liz Canty, 27, now of Huntsville, Ala., finished 13th in the women’s field in 20:55:49 – and many of the current residents had memorable weekends, too. With two victories to his credit at trail ultramarathons in eastern Massachusetts already this year, Brian Burke set his sights on the trails of western Massachusetts on Saturday, June 22, when he took part in the Vegan Power 50K in Pittsfield, Mass.
While more than 130 runners were taking on the trails of Pittsfield State Forest in western Massachusetts for the 50K and 25K races at the BURCS’ Vegan Power Trail Races, several more runners headed out-of-state to race. Some headed to neighboring New York, where Westborough’s Ben Nephew brought home a win and Woburn’s Samantha LeBlanc earned a second-place finish; others went north to Vermont for the popular Catamount 50K. Others, like Pittsfield’s Kehr Davis, took on the grueling Broken Arrow Sky Race in California, while a few more raced the Many on the Genny 50K in New York and the 50-mile race at Oregon’s Old Cascadia. Those five races are featured in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Manitou’s Revenge, Catamount, Broken Arrow, Many on the Genny, and Old Cascadia→
