Telus, Brinkert Notch 100K Course Records at TARC 100

WESTWOOD, Mass. – When Marek Telus made his 50-mile debut in May at Pineland Farms in Maine, he went out too fast, hit the wall and bonked hard.

Telus finished that race – and posted a still speedy time of 7:47:38 – but he wasn’t satisfied. He tucked away the experience as a lesson learned, and he brought the knowledge gained with him to the starting line of his 100K debut at the TARC 100 on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Hale Reservation.

“I wanted to go out conservatively at first, just to make sure I’m not going to crash in the later miles. I didn’t want to do that again,” said Telus, 41, of Hopkinton, N.H. “If people were ahead of me, I didn’t worry about it much. I thought I’d just do my best, and it just happened to be my day today.”

Boy did it ever. Continue reading Telus, Brinkert Notch 100K Course Records at TARC 100

Cutter Perseveres for TARC 50-Mile Victory

WESTWOOD, Mass. – The 50-mile race at the TARC 100 presented runners with a unique challenge on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Hale Reservation.

Trail Animals Aim to Give TARC 100 a Feel-Good Farewell

The TARC 100 has experienced plenty of evolution during its four years of existence, from venue changes, to season changes, to weather changes, to additional distances offered and number of participants involved.

Through it all, two things have remained constant: As Massachusetts’ only 100-mile race, that distance has been offered; and runners have been treated to a hearty dose of hospitality that the Trail Animals take pride in providing.

Both will be on full display again this weekend, Oct. 8-9, at Hale Reservation in Westwood, Mass., at the fourth and final TARC 100 before the event goes on indefinite hiatus. The 100-mile race begins at 6 a.m. Saturday, followed by the 100K at 10 a.m., 50-miler at 2 p.m., and the marathon at 6 a.m. Sunday. Teamwork, Resiliency Propel Team With A Vision Ultra Squad to Ragnar Finish Line

Excitement. Euphoria. Absolute exhaustion.

Emotions ran the gamut for the members of Team With A Vision and Team Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Saturday, Sept. 17, as they stood at the Ragnar Reach the Beach finish line at Hampton Beach, N.H.

“It was euphoria,” recalled Team With A Vision runner Brian Switzer. “I was just high on endorphins, lack of sleep and lack of food, and was so excited about being able to finish as a team.”

For the previous 30 hours the teams ran side-by-side, sharing every step and every moment together as they completed the 203-mile journey that began a day earlier at the Bretton Woods Ski Area.

Now, thanks to a collaboration between the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MABVI), the CAA, and New Hampshire-based non-profit organization 2020 Vision Quest, the teams had made history. New Yorkers, Medford’s LeBlanc Dominate at Vegan Power 50K

The New York presence was heavy at the Vegan Power 50K – heavy as in eight of the top 10 finishers hailed from the Empire State.

Even so, a Bay State resident made sure the home state was represented with a champion Saturday, June 18, at Pittsfield State Forest in Pittsfield, Mass. Continue reading New Yorkers, Medford’s LeBlanc Dominate at Vegan Power 50K

Plenty of Miles and Good Times at ‘Not the Worst Weekend’

SOMERVILLE, Mass. – The Davis Square Runners have logged thousands of miles and entered teams in numerous races since their founding in 2011, but one thing they hadn’t done was conduct their own race.

That changed on Saturday, April 30, when the group played host to the “Not the Worst Weekend” Fat Ass 8-Hour Race. In keeping with the ”fat ass” format of some of ultrarunning’s traditional, grassroots events, “Not the Worst Weekend” had no entry fee, no frills, and gave runners the opportunity to take on as many miles as they desired during the time limit, regardless of distance preferences or ability levels.
