Some things never change about the Cape Cod Ultrarunning Society’s annual Cape Cod Frozen Fat Ass run.
Fred Murolo is always there – the 60-year-old from Cheshire, Conn., is the only person to finish the 50K all 11 years – and it’s always cold. The specificity of the “cold” sometimes varies. There may be rain, snow, and temperatures ranging from the frigid single digits to the more manageable 40s, but the wind along the Cape ensures it’s always bone-chilling cold. Worth the Wait: McCarthy, Ringheiser to Represent Massachusetts at Western States
As the sun rose over Massachusetts on a blustery, 30-degree morning, Maddy McCarthy laced up her running shoes and headed out for a run. Meanwhile, Karen Ringheiser headed to the Middlesex Fells Reservation to lend support at the Fells Winter Ultra.
It was Saturday, Dec. 3; lottery day for Western States Endurance Run hopefuls. McCarthy and Ringheiser were among the 51 runners from Massachusetts and 4,248 applicants worldwide vying for 250 spots up for grabs in ultrarunning’s original 100-mile race.
Both McCarthy and Ringheiser knew the lottery day drill as well as anybody. For most, that drill involves starting the day feeling hopeful, eventually learning that their names weren’t drawn, and then beginning the search for a race to re-qualify for the following year’s lottery. It was a scorching weekend in the desert Oct. 29-30 in Fountain Hills, Ariz., with temperatures that hit triple-digits and plenty of sun beating down to cook the ground. It’s not a stretch of the imagination to assume ultrarunners contributed to that late-October heat, however, given the number of scorching performances turned in at the Javelina Jundred, a 100-mile and 100-kilometer race. Telus, Brinkert Notch 100K Course Records at TARC 100
WESTWOOD, Mass. – When Marek Telus made his 50-mile debut in May at Pineland Farms in Maine, he went out too fast, hit the wall and bonked hard.
Telus finished that race – and posted a still speedy time of 7:47:38 – but he wasn’t satisfied. He tucked away the experience as a lesson learned, and he brought the knowledge gained with him to the starting line of his 100K debut at the TARC 100 on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Hale Reservation.
“I wanted to go out conservatively at first, just to make sure I’m not going to crash in the later miles. I didn’t want to do that again,” said Telus, 41, of Hopkinton, N.H. “If people were ahead of me, I didn’t worry about it much. I thought I’d just do my best, and it just happened to be my day today.”

Cutter Perseveres for TARC 50-Mile Victory
WESTWOOD, Mass. – The 50-mile race at the TARC 100 presented runners with a unique challenge on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Hale Reservation.
By starting the race in the early afternoon, runners would have to cover most of the second 25-mile loop after dark.
