Ultrarunners from New England feasted on trails one final time before Thanksgiving during the Nov. 17-18 weekend with runners taking on ultra events from Connecticut to Nevada and points in between. Some gathered in Southington, Conn., for the seventh annual CT Trailmixers Fall Fling 400, while many more headed south to Maryland for the latest edition of the JFK 50. Other ultras where New Englanders toed the starting line included the Swamp Fox Ultra in South Carolina, Dead Horse in Utah, and Fire Fest in Nevada. We have it all covered in this edition of the roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Tunnel Hill, Roxbury, and Cantuckee Y’all
The final multi-ultra week of the year in Massachusetts was on tap during the Nov. 10-12 weekend as runners tackled the 6-hour timed TARCkey Trot at Wright-Locke Farm and Whipple Hill in Winchester and an undetermined time-length event at the Race for DFL last person standing ultra in Winchendon. Those races will have their own separate recap writeups. Beyond those local ultras, a few other runners conquered courses in the lead-up to the Thanksgiving holiday. A Few tackled the inaugural 50K ultra as part of the Roxbury Marathon in Connecticut. Others traveled to Illinois and turned in fast performances while witnessing even faster ones – including a world record – at Tunnel Hill. Another Massachusetts man made a strong ultra debut at a first-year ultra in Kentucky. We have them all covered in this edition of the roundup.

The busiest stretch of ultramarathon racing in New England came to a close during the Nov. 4-5 weekend with four ultra events throughout the region – the Trail Animals Running Club’s TARC Stone Cat Trail Festival, the Richmond Trail Running Club’s RUTfest in Vermont, the Hamsterwheel in New Hampshire, and 8-Hours at the Farm in Connecticut. In addition, several runners traveled beyond the region to take on ultras in Alabama, Virginia, West Virginia and New York. Stone Cat is featured in a separate article and results aren’t yet posted from RUTfest, but we have all the others covered in this jam-packed edition of the roundup.

A red-hot October came to a close with just a handful of New England ultrarunners traveling to races, either close by at the Tunxis Trail Ultramarathon in Connecticut or bigger national events like the Javelina Jundred in Arizona and the new Canyonlands Ultra in Utah. We also tracked down results from the Oct. 21-22 Survival of the FI.T.test 30-Hour Ultra in Rhode Island where several New Englanders had strong showings – none stronger than Taylor Verville’s 100-mile victory. These races and more make for some light reading in this edition of the roundup.

New England ultrarunners took to the trails in both eastern and western Massachusetts during the Oct. 21-22 weekend for the Mt. Tom Trail Race 50K in Easthampton and the Womp Romp 50K in Hingham, but those popular events weren’t the only racing destination for runners from the region. A few took on a road ultra in Maine at Farm to Farm, and others toed the starting line at Bimblers Bluff in Connecticut. Several more tackled up to 30 hours at Survival of the F.I.T.test in Rhode Island, though official results of that event aren’t yet available. Many more ventured beyond the region to places as far south as Florida and as far west as California, and places in between, to take on tough courses. Several races have yet to post their results, but we’ve caught up with as many as we can in this edition of the roundup.

More than 850 trail- and ultrarunners took on races in New England during the Oct. 14-15 weekend, from Ghost Train in New Hampshire (will have separate recap), to the Forbidden Forest 30-Hour Ultra in Connecticut, Devil’s Den in Vermont, and the Rhode Island Trail Classic, all of which were featured in a previous roundup. In this edition of the roundup we catch up on how New Englanders did at races beyond the region. First we head to California where two Boston residents earned top-five finishes in the 50K at the Kodiak Ultras. Then we travel north to Oregon where Sudbury resident Shelley Liu had a strong showing at the Rogue Gorge 50K. From there we head to Arizona where a few New Englanders explored the Navajo Reservation on foot at the Canyon De Chelly 55K. Finally, we close out the roundup in Virginia where a few ultrarunners – first-timers and veterans alike – raced at My First 50.

More than 600 runners gathered in Brookline, N.H., for the wildly popular Ghost Train Trail Race. Still, Ghost Train wasn’t the only ultra event in New England during the Oct. 14-15 weekend. Runners from the region also gathered at starting lines in Connecticut, Vermont and Rhode Island and tackled the trails for runs between 11 and 30 hours. Ghost Train will have a standalone recap, and a second roundup will include results for New England ultrarunners at ultras beyond the region, but in this edition we keep it close to home.

Hundreds of New England ultrarunners stayed close to home during the Oct. 7-8 weekend to race the Midstate Massive Ultra-Trail, Bubba’s Backyard Ultra or the Big Brad Ultras. Those events are highlighted in other coverage on this site. But a number of other runners ventured beyond New England – as close as New York and New Jersey and as far as Illinois, Arkansas, Arizona and Utah, to tackle other events. We’ve caught up on as many of those races as we can in this edition of the roundup.

The Oct. 7-8 weekend was Midstate Massive weekend for hundreds of ultrarunners throughout New England as the three-distance event – 100-miles, 50 miles and 30-miles – took runners into four of the region’s states. Still, it was far from the only ultra event in New England that weekend as two other popular events also took place: Bubba’s Backyard Ultra in New Hampshire and the Big Brad Ultras in Maine. There were several other ultras across the country that attracted runners from the region – and we’ll have them covered in a second roundup – but this edition stays in New England.

While dozens of New England ultrarunners ventured outside of the region to race during the Sept. 30-Oct. 1 weekend, many stayed in the Northeast to tackle courses nearby, from steep, mountainous terrain to rolling singletrack and doubletrack, to easy-running gravel and even a track. Here in part two of the weekly roundup we catch up on the ultras that happened in New England and nearby New York and New Jersey. Big performances abounded, from a 100-miler with more than 40,000 feet of climbing in Vermont, to a record-setting night at the Joe English Twilight Challenge in New Hampshire that leads off this edition of the roundup.
