MassUltra Roundup: Hamsterwheel and Stone Mill
The 2016 racing season is starting to wind down, and results were hard to come by for races outside of the Bay State last weekend. We are still tracking down results from the Rhode Island 6-Hour Ultra and will roll them into next week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Hamsterwheel and Stone Mill
PCT Record-Holder McConaughy Sizzles at Stone Cat 50
Joe McConaughy averaged more than 50 miles per day for more than 53 consecutive days en route to logging the fastest known time on the 2,660-mile Pacific Crest Trail in 2014, so it came as little surprise when he had another FKT in his sights Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Stone Cat 50 in Ipswich, Mass. Continue reading PCT Record-Holder McConaughy Sizzles at Stone Cat 50

Scary-Fast: Caron Haunts Ghost Train Record Book with Sub-15-Hour 100-Miler
BROOKLINE, N.H. – The faint glow of a flashlight beam shook in the distance with each smooth, deliberate swing of Patrick Caron’s left arm.
Flanked by his pacer, Michael Franzino, who had just run the past 15 miles with Caron, the pair cruised into Camp Tevya, the official start/finish point for each out-and-back of the Ghost Train Rail Trail Races on Oct. 22-23. Caron was 90 miles into his 100-mile race, and far ahead of course-record pace. Continue reading Scary-Fast: Caron Haunts Ghost Train Record Book with Sub-15-Hour 100-Miler
MassUltra Roundup: Javelina Jundred and Autumn Leaves
Javelina Jundred
It was a scorching weekend in the desert Oct. 29-30 in Fountain Hills, Ariz., with temperatures that hit triple-digits and plenty of sun beating down to cook the ground. It’s not a stretch of the imagination to assume ultrarunners contributed to that late-October heat, however, given the number of scorching performances turned in at the Javelina Jundred, a 100-mile and 100-kilometer race. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Javelina Jundred and Autumn Leaves
MassUltra Roundup: Pony Express, Bimblers Bluff, Elk-Kings, and Goatz
A large crop of Bay State residents journeyed a few strides beyond the state border into New Hampshire last weekend for the Ghost Train Rail Trail Races. Results of that event are still being finalized, so we will highlight it in a separate article later this week. Not everyone went north to race, however. A handful of Massachusetts residents headed elsewhere to take on ultramarathon challenges, and we have included four of those events in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Pony Express, Bimblers Bluff, Elk-Kings, and Goatz

Grindstone 100
East Coast 100-milers don’t come much tougher than Grindstone, and the 2016 edition was no different. The singletrack journey through the Blue Ridge Mountains on Oct. 7-9 in Swoope, Va., was a rain-soaked adventure. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Grindstone, Joe English, Big Brad, Can Lake, and St. Pat’s
Andover’s Swenson Delivers Record-Setting Performance at TARC 100
WESTWOOD, Mass. – The first few miles didn’t go according to plan for Will Swenson at the TARC 100 on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Hale Reservation. As it turned out, that set the tone for a masterpiece of a performance as Swenson dominated the race in course-record time.
“My expectation of the race was that I was just going to see how it went and take what I could get,” he said. “If I found myself in position to be competitive then I certainly wanted to take that and see what I could do.” Continue reading Andover’s Swenson Delivers Record-Setting Performance at TARC 100
