Spring is here, leaves are emerging, and racing season is ramping up. That much was clear during the April 11-13 weekend as New England ultrarunners took to the trails from coast to coast, some earning their first ultramarathon finishes and others securing spots on the podium. While a few dozen runners raced locally at the Spring Fever 8-Hour in Hingham, Mass. (separate recap to follow), many others scattered across the country, racing from New York to Alabama, to Kansas and Oregon. We make seven stops in this edition of the roundup, but we lead off with Boston resident Philip Royer’s dynamite performance at the Gorge Waterfalls 100K.

After several jam-packed weekends of ultramarathon racing in March, April began with a quiet slate for New England runners on the national scene. That may be because several raced the Mt. Toby Ultra and Trail Race in Massachusetts, or because several other ultras are on the local slate in the weeks ahead. Still, runners spent the April 5-6 taking on ultramarathons in North Carolina, California and Georgia. We have them all covered, starting with Crystal Ross’s stellar performance in her return to the Umstead 100.

Connecticut was the hot spot for ultrarunning in New England during the March 28-30 weekend with the classic Enchanted Forest Ultra back for its ninth year along with a gnarly new addition from Steep Endurance – the Sleeping Giant Trail Runs. Both events, along with the Spring On the Trails 12- and 6-hour ultra in nearby New York, are covered here in Part II of this week’s roundup.

The March 28-30 weekend was on the lighter side for New Englanders following a massive slate of events the week before, but it was still busy enough to entail a two-roundup week. We’ll close out in the Northeast, with ultras in Connecticut and New York, but here in Part I we turn to the results from the rest of the country, from Utah to Ohio, Virginia and Georgia.

The red-hot March 21-23 weekend saw New Englanders earn ultramarathon finishes at more than a dozen races beyond the region, and the volume of results merited a three-part roundup to include it all. Part I rounded up results from out West and Part II recapped results from the Northeast. We close it out strong here in Part III with outcomes from the Southeast, including a pair of victories for runners from the region. Rhode Island’s Cole Crosby delivered a dazzling come-from-behind win in the 51.4-mile Badwater Cape Fear in North Carolina, and Massachusetts resident Daniel McCarthy earned a 50K victory at the Camp Croft Ultras in South Carolina. Those stellar performances lead off this edition of the roundup.

The massive March 21-23 weekend of ultramarathon racing was so busy for New Englanders that this week’s roundup merits not one, not two … but three parts to capture it all. Part I focused on results from out West. Part III will recap results from the Southeast, but here in Part II we turn to the Northeast, with results from ultras in Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland, and Connecticut’s Blake Hayden gets top billing for his 12-hour victory at the Dogwood Ultra.
