MassUltra Roundup: Manchester 2 Monadnock, Hellbender, Dirty German, Quad Rock, and Strolling Jim

The May 6-8 weekend was jam-packed in Massachusetts with the return of Wapack and Back and the inaugural Needham Backyard Ultra, but those local events weren’t the only attractions to lure New England ultrarunners. Some headed north to New Hampshire, including Harvard’s Roy Van Cleef who followed up his shared victory at the 2021 Manchester 2 Monadnock 55-miler by setting a course record this year. Meanwhile, Stow’s Sophia Farnsworth secured her first 100-mile finish at the grueling Hellbender 100 in North Carolina. Others headed to Pennsylvania for the Dirty German Endurance Festival, to Colorado for the Quad Rock 50, and Tennessee for the legendary Strolling Jim 40-miler. All of those events are featured in this edition of the roundup.

The first edition of the Needham Backyard Ultra took place Saturday, May 7, at Needham Town Forest. Twenty-six runners started the day, and the last runner standing completed 12 hours on the course. Trail-Running Camp Set for June at Harold Parker State Forest

A staple of the West Coast trail-running scene – Trail Camp – is returning to Massachusetts.

Five years after the Trail Animals Running Club last played host to a trail-running camp in the Bay State, Douglyss Giuliana, head running coach at Adapt & Thrive Performance, is resurrecting the experience. Giuliana will play host to a three-day trail-running camp June 24-26 at Harold Parker State Forest in Andover, Mass.

MassUltra Roundup: White Lake Ultras, WausaUltra Backyard, and C&O Canal

It was a record-setting weekend for ultrarunners in New Hampshire as five of the six course records fell at the fourth edition of the White Lake Ultras. In addition to that increasingly popular event, a few runners from the region traveled elsewhere to race. That included a few 100-mile finishers on the C&O Canal, as well as Winchester resident Tom Flummerfelt’s first foray into Backyard Ultra racing in Wisconsin. Those events are featured in this edition of the roundup.

Spring Classic Breaks with Tradition in Post-Pandemic Return

WESTON, Mass. – The last time the Trail Animals Running Club played host to the TARC Spring Classic, runners dodged or splashed through puddles and a volunteer dumped buckets of wood chips near the timing mats to try to keep them from becoming submerged.

Results: TARC Spring Classic

Following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trail Animals Running Club once again played host to the TARC Spring Classic 50K, marathon, half marathon and 10K trail races on Saturday, April 23, in the Jericho Woods of Weston, Mass. It was the 10th running of the event, and more than 200 runners took part in the various distances offered.

MassUltra Roundup: Enchanted Forest and Lake Waramaug

The return of the Trail Animals Running Club’s TARC Spring Classic meant more than 200 trail- and ultra-runners flocked to Weston, Mass., during the April 23-24 weekend to race, but several runners ventured to other places to race, too. That included two popular Connecticut races – the Enchanted Forest Ultra and the Jack Bristol Lake Waramaug Ultras. Those regional races highlight this edition of the roundup.
