Big Miles for Bago, Many Others, at BURCS Summer Fat Ass Ultra

WINDSOR, Mass. – The sun beat down on Dietmar Bago’s head as he covered the final steps toward a pop-up tent and removed his sweat-soaked bandana. Underneath the tent he found a table full of tasty snacks, an assortment of Gatorade flavors and other cold drinks and – most important – shade. MassUltra Roundup: Golden Gate Trail Race

The lightest weekend of out-of-state racing in months featured just one Massachusetts resident toeing the starting line at a race beyond the Bay State, but that runner – Lynnfield resident Dan Kelley – more than made his presence felt when he traveled cross-country to California for the Golden Gate Trail Race 50K. This week’s roundup is a one-man show. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Golden Gate Trail Race

International Roundup: Zugspitz Ultratrail and the Wicklow Way Race

A trio of Massachusetts ultrarunners recently tackled races in Europe, and they delivered strong performances. Needham’s Patrick Caron and Quincy’s Greg Soutiea both earned fourth-place finishes at international races, and Boston’s William Hafferty also secured a hard-earned finish in Ireland. Both the Zugspitz Ultratrail in Germany and the Wicklow Way Race in Ireland are captured in our inaugural international roundup. Continue reading International Roundup: Zugspitz Ultratrail and the Wicklow Way Race

MassUltra Roundup: Forbidden Forest and the Finger Lakes 50s

The weekend prior to the Fourth of July is typically quiet on the ultramarathon scene with only a handful of options nationally. Two of them took place in the Northeast and included finishers from Massachusetts. Beverly’s Scott Defusco had the biggest weekend as he won the inaugural Forbidden Forest 30-Hour Ultra in Connecticut, and four runners from the Bay State brought home 50K finishes at the Finger Lakes 50s in New York. Both offer some light reading after a light weekend of racing. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Forbidden Forest and the Finger Lakes 50s

Roundup: Manitou’s Revenge, Catamount, Many on the Genny, Black Hills, Rodeo Valley, Western States, and Infinitus

While Western States received a well-deserved spotlight on June 23-24, Massachusetts ultrarunners took on other races around the country, too, from Vermont and New York in the East to South Dakota in the upper Midwest and California out West. Kehr Davis’s three-peat at Manitou’s Revenge highlighted the weekend, but we also dug into some results from last month to include Infinitus finishers. As usual this time of year, there’s plenty to read in this week’s roundup. Continue reading Roundup: Manitou’s Revenge, Catamount, Many on the Genny, Black Hills, Rodeo Valley, Western States, and Infinitus

MassUltra Roundup: Drummer Hill, Bighorn, Broken Arrow, Eastern Divide, Mohican, Wy’east Wonder, and Worlds End

This week’s roundup captured a few out-of-state races from the June 16-17 weekend—including the Drummer Hill 50K in nearby New Hampshire and the classic Bighorn 100-miler out West in Wyoming—but also allowed us to catch up on races we missed in recent weeks, like Jesse Carter’s runner-up finish in the 50K at Worlds End in early June in Pennsylvania. There’s a little bit of old and a little bit of new in this week’s roundup.
