MassUltra Roundup: Riverlands, Blood Root, and Spring Fling

We close out the May 10-11 weekend ultrarunning roundups here at home in New England for Part III with three events that were daunting in their own unique ways. In Connecticut, runners took on a loop course for 10 hours of endurance fun at the Spring Fling 600. In Vermont, the Blood Root Ultras are always tough, with big climbs, mud and more at the multi-distance festival. But we begin in Maine with the Riverlands 100. Riverlands has thrown all sorts of challenging conditions at runners through the years, including extreme heat in 2022. But this year … this was the year that put the “river” in Riverlands.

Our journey through New Englanders’ ultrarunning exploits from the May 10-11 weekend continues in Part II of this week’s roundup as we work our way closer to home. MassUltra Roundup: Jemez Mountain and Tillamook Burn

The May 10-11 weekend saw a handful of ultras across New England as runners endured sloppy, soggy conditions from Massachusetts to Maine. Even with all of the local action, several runners from the region scattered throughout the country to race, and we’re catching up on their results with a few region-based roundups. We start in the West, where New Englanders secured hard-earned finishes at the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs in New Mexico and Tillamook Burn in Oregon.

MassUltra Roundup: White Lake Ultras, Forgotten Forest, and the Blue 2 Blue Challenge

The first weekend of May saw a trio of ultras play out in New England, with several record-breaking performances in New Hampshire at the White Lake Ultras, and big performances at the Forgotten Forest 9-Hour Ultra and the Blue 2 Blue Challenge 50K in Connecticut. We have them all covered here in Part II of this week’s roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Trails to the Sky, McDonald Forest, Salt Flats, Grayson Highlands, and Strolling Jim

May kicked off with a jam-packed slate of ultramarathons in New England, including two in Connecticut – the Forgotten Forest 9-Hour and the Blue 2 Blue Challenge, as well as the White Lake Ultras in New Hampshire. We’ll have those ultras covered in Part II of this week’s roundup, but here in Part I we look beyond New England and catch up on how runners from the region performed at other ultras throughout the country, from New Jersey to Oregon and points in between.

MassUltra Roundup: Zane Grey, Royal Gorge, and Earth Day Bucklemania

In Part I of this week’s roundup we focused on ultras in the East with a big spotlight on the record-setting action at the Jack Bristol Lake Waramaug Ultras. Here in Part II we turn to events in the West and Midwest, including the Arizona classic Zane Grey Highline Trail Runs, the Royal Gorge Groove 50K in Colorado, and the multi-day Earth Day Bucklemania festival in Kansas.

MassUltra Roundup: Lake Waramaug, C&O Canal, Big Turtle, Falling Water, and Bronze Dragonfly

The New England ultrarunning calendar closed out April with a pair of big events, the Trail Animals Running Club’s TARC Spring Classic in Massachusetts (to be covered in separate story), and the historic Jack Bristol Lake Waramaug Ultras in Connecticut. While New Englanders also ventured beyond the region to more than a dozen other ultras, we lead off Part I of this week’s roundup by focusing on ultras in the East, beginning at Lake Waramaug where a dynamite female field did serious damage to the 100K record board and two runners toppled a milestone that stood for more than 35 years.

MassUltra Roundup: Traprock, Mendocino Coast, Rattler, and the VUE

Easter weekend means two things in the New England ultrarunning world: Traprock and “Don’t Run Boston.” Both iconic events typically fall on the same weekend, and occasionally the same day, offering runners a pair of burly challenges on technical trails to kick their seasons into high gear. DRB will have its own separate recap, but the Traprock 50K leads off the April 18-20 weekend edition of the roundup. Additionally, we catch up on results from a few New Englanders who headed west to ultras in California, Colorado and Arizona.

MassUltra Roundup: Gorge Waterfalls, Chief Ladiga, English’s Ridge Rumble, Leona Divide, Mile 0, Peterson Ridge Rumble, and Whiskey Basin

Spring is here, leaves are emerging, and racing season is ramping up. That much was clear during the April 11-13 weekend as New England ultrarunners took to the trails from coast to coast, some earning their first ultramarathon finishes and others securing spots on the podium. While a few dozen runners raced locally at the Spring Fever 8-Hour in Hingham, Mass. (separate recap to follow), many others scattered across the country, racing from New York to Alabama, to Kansas and Oregon. We make seven stops in this edition of the roundup, but we lead off with Boston resident Philip Royer’s dynamite performance at the Gorge Waterfalls 100K.

MassUltra Roundup: Umstead, American River, and Bootlegger

After several jam-packed weekends of ultramarathon racing in March, April began with a quiet slate for New England runners on the national scene. That may be because several raced the Mt. Toby Ultra and Trail Race in Massachusetts, or because several other ultras are on the local slate in the weeks ahead. Still, runners spent the April 5-6 taking on ultramarathons in North Carolina, California and Georgia. We have them all covered, starting with Crystal Ross’s stellar performance in her return to the Umstead 100.
