MassUltra Roundup: Cayuga Trails and Worlds End
Massachusetts ultrarunners made their presence felt at the USATF 50-Mile Championships at Cayuga Trails in New York as two men and three women finished in the top 10 in their respective divisions. Meanwhile, Tess Harvey tackled a rugged 50K in Pennsylvania at Worlds End State Park.
There were at least 30 ultramarathons around the United States on June 3-4, but it was a light weekend of racing for runners from the Bay State with two in-state races on the horizon. The inaugural North Face Endurance Challenge 50-miler and 50K races take place Saturday, June 10, at Wachusett Mountain, followed by the Berkshire Ultrarunning Community for Service’s annual Vegan Power 50K on June 17 in Pittsfield. MassUltra Roundup: Cruel Jewel, Quest for the Crest, Kettletown, and 3 Days at the Fair
When the Cruel Jewel doled out its punishment on Tom Flummerfelt in 2016, the Winchester, Mass., resident apparently didn’t get enough of it. He followed up his sixth-place finish from a year ago by finishing fourth at the grueling Georgia race last weekend. Flummerfelt wasn’t the lone Massachusetts resident to finish the Cruel Jewel and secure a Hardrock Hundred qualifier, however. Melrose resident Ryan Knapp did, too. The duo’s monster performances in Georgia headline this week’s roundup, which also includes results from the Quest for the Crest 50K in North Carolina, the 50K at Connecticut’s Kettletown State Park, and some strong showings at 3 Days at the Fair in New Jersey. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Cruel Jewel, Quest for the Crest, Kettletown, and 3 Days at the Fair

More results – including the Big A 50K and the Rock the Ridge 50-miler – are still being tracked down and will be included in next week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Massanutten, Jack Bristol, Miwok, Strolling Jim, and Spring Fling 600

MassUltra Roundup: Gorge Waterfalls, Runamuck, Shepaug, Squak Mountain, Austin Rattler, and Bull Run Run
April 8-9 was the busiest weekend of the year so far for Massachusetts’ runners heading out of state to take on ultramarathons – and many of them delivered big performances. Of particular note, Joe McConaughy and Jake Dissinger headed cross-country to the high-profile Gorge Waterfalls 100K and turned in some of the strongest performances of the day. Closer to home, Brian Rusiecki headlined a massive pack of Bay State residents at the Runamuck 50K in Vermont where he notched his second victory in two weeks.
Those are just a few of the names included in the longest roundup so far in 2017. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Gorge Waterfalls, Runamuck, Shepaug, Squak Mountain, Austin Rattler, and Bull Run Run
MassUltra Roundup: Umstead, Naked Prussian, Georgia Death Race, New Jersey, and the Run4Water
April 1-2 was a busy weekend for ultramarathons nationwide, and plenty of Massachusetts runners stepped to the starting line at out-of-state events. Five races made this week’s roundup, and others may be rolled into next week’s roundup as results and details are still coming in.
This week, Natick’s Matthew Knights made his 100-mile debut with a speedy performance at Umstead and 100-mile veteran Adena Schutzberg of Somerville also snagged a buckle; South Deerfield’s Brian Rusiecki returned to the top of the podium with a victory at the Naked Prussian; Quincy’s Greg Soutiea threw down more than 120 miles at the Run4Water; and Bay State residents also secured hard-earned finishes at the Georgia Death Race and the New Jersey Ultra Festival.
