MassUltra Roundup: Manchester 2 Monadnock, UROC, Riverlands, D2D2D, Quicksilver, and Ice Age

May 12-13 was a busy weekend for in-state races with Wapack and Back and the G.A.C. Mother’s Day 6-Hour Run, but that didn’t mean it was a quiet weekend for ultrarunners hitting the road beyond the Bay State. From nearby Manchester 2 Monadnock in New Hampshire and the Riverlands 100 in Maine, to races in the heartland and the west, the ultramarathon season continues to ramp up as summer nears. MassUltra Roundup (Part 2): Big A, Bear Mountain, Wildflower, and Miwok

Last weekend’s busy ultramarathon schedule was so jam-packed that it merited two roundups. Part 1 featured the White Lake Ultras, as well as the Connecticut Trail Mixers’ Spring Fling, the Salt Flats 100, the Strolling Jim 40, and the Mt. Si 50K. Part 2 catches you up on the Big A 50K in Maine, The North Face Endurance Challenge 50-mile and 50K ultras at Bear Mountain in New York, the Wildflower 50K in Texas, and the Miwok 100K in California. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup (Part 2): Big A, Bear Mountain, Wildflower, and Miwok

MassUltra Roundup (Part 1): White Lake, Spring Fling, Salt Flats, Strolling Jim, and Mt. Si

The 2018 ultra season is starting to hit full swing with at least 38 ultramarathons taking place in North America during the first weekend of May. Runners from the Bay State scattered to tackle races throughout the country, from nearby New England states to trails out West. In fact, the weekend was so jam-packed with performances that it merits a two-part roundup this week. Here’s the first part. Stay tuned for Part 2 (Bear Mountain, Big A 50K, Peak). Continue reading MassUltra Roundup (Part 1): White Lake, Spring Fling, Salt Flats, Strolling Jim, and Mt. Si

MassUltra Roundup: Promise Land, Jack Bristol, TNFEC-DC, the Canyons, and Zion

A few of the Northeast’s classic ultras – Virginia’s Promise Land 50K, Connecticut’s Jack Bristol Ultras at Lake Waramaug, and The North Face Endurance Challenge’s annual stop outside Washington, D.C. – attracted ultrarunners from Massachusetts, as did a relatively new ultra out West on some of the sport’s most hallowed grounds. Additionally, we tracked down the results of the Zion 100 from April 21-22, which included a handful of buckle-earners from the Bay State. Those five races make for plenty of reading in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Promise Land, Jack Bristol, TNFEC-DC, the Canyons, and Zion

MassUltra Roundup: Enchanted Forest, Hellbender, Yakima Skyline, and Mendocino Coast

While most Massachusetts ultrarunners who competed on April 21-22 were in Weston, Mass., for the TARC Spring Classic, a few headed out-of-state to take on new trails. Some were in Connecticut, others in North Carolina, Washington or California. All are included in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Enchanted Forest, Hellbender, Yakima Skyline, and Mendocino Coast

Roundup: Traprock, Lake Sonoma, and Beyond Limits

Two in-state races April 14-15 meant few Massachusetts ultrarunners hit the road for out-of-state ultras, but that didn’t mean every ultrarunner from the Bay State stayed home. A few drove to nearby Connecticut—including South Deerfield’s Brian Rusiecki who defended his title at Traprock, and Northampton’s Jake Dissinger traveled cross-country to take on some of the nation’s best at Lake Sonoma in California. Additionally, we went back and tracked down results from the Beyond Limits Ultra on April 5-8 where Kim Vanyo and Michael Saporito delivered 48 hours of ultrarunning in California. Read on for more details from the Traprock 50K, the Lake Sonoma 50, and the Beyond Limits Ultra in this week’s roundup. Continue reading Roundup: Traprock, Lake Sonoma, and Beyond Limits

MassUltra Roundup: Runamuck, Bull Run Run, Mad City, Umstead, Mountains-to-Sea, and Oriflamme

After a quiet March, April has opened with a flurry of Massachusetts ultrarunners hitting the road or taking to the air to travel to out-of-state races. Runners tackled trails all across the country, from Vermont, Virginia, and North Carolina out east, to California out west and Wisconsin in the heartland. We chased them all down – and likely missed a few along the way – in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Runamuck, Bull Run Run, Mad City, Umstead, Mountains-to-Sea, and Oriflamme

MassUltra Roundup: Mt. Tammany 10, Terrapin Mountain, Hat Run, and Greenbrier

While many of Massachusetts’ ultrarunners were racing or volunteering or racing at the To Hale and Back 6-Hour Ultra on Saturday, March 24, in Westwood, Mass., a few ventured beyond the Bay State and took on races in New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland. Most notably, a pair of women – Kehr Davis of Great Barrington and Amy Rusiecki of South Deerfield – brought home victories from tough mountain races. We have it all covered in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Mt. Tammany 10, Terrapin Mountain, Hat Run, and Greenbrier

MassUltra Roundup: Badwater Cape Fear

With the exception of the Cape Cod Frozen Fat Ass 50K in January, the ultramarathon season has been quiet in Massachusetts so far in 2018. That will change on March 24 with the opening of the Trail Animals Running Club’s race series at Hale Reservation. In the meantime, one Bay State resident hit the road on the weekend of March 17-18 for an out-of-state ultra. Nantucket’s David Desnoyers traveled to North Carolina and hammered out a top-10 finish at the Badwater Cape Fear 50K. He gets this week’s roundup all to himself. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Badwater Cape Fear

MassUltra Roundup: Bel Monte and Land Between the Lakes

Not many ultrarunners ventured beyond the Bay State borders to race during the weekend of March 10-11, but those who did fared quite well. Both Deanna Nappi of Jamaica Plain and Tyler Dion of Leominster delivered podium-worthy efforts at races in Virginia and Kentucky, making it a highly successful weekend for the Massachusetts ultra community. Their performances – Nappi at the Bel Monte 50K and Dion at the Land Between the Lakes 60K – are featured in this week’s roundup.
