Big miles and massive performances were aplenty on the trails of New England during the July 11-13 weekend. A number of runners surpassed the 200-mile mark and various course records fell at the Notchview Ultra in Windsor, Mass., which will be featured in a separate story. Additionally, records were smashed at both the Spaulding Woods 50K in New Hampshire and the Back Cove Backyard Ultra in Maine, both of which are featured in this edition of the roundup. One more regional race also took place last weekend, but results from the 7-11 Slurpee Day Ultra 60K in Connecticut were unavailable at the time of publication.

Mid-July is here, and the heat is turning up on the ultrarunning season in New England. The popular Notchview Ultra was the biggest event in the region during the July 11-13 weekend, with additional ultras taking place in Maine, New Hampshire in Connecticut. Notchview will have its own separate recap, and we’ll have a second roundup for the additional New England races, but here in Part I we look West to ultras in Colorado, Idaho and Oregon. We begin in Colorado, where Maine native Katie Schide turned in a stunning performance at the Hardrock 100-Mile Endurance Run. In the course of 13 months, Schide has won three of the sport’s most prestigious ultras and eclipsed two of Courtney Dauwalter’s course records, solidifying her position as one of the sport’s great female ultrarunners. The July 4-6 weekend was a celebration of American independence, but we begin this edition of the roundup north of the border at the Quebec Mega-Trail in Canada. A handful of New Englanders took part in the event’s multiple ultra distances, and Vermont’s Eric LiPuma and Britta Clark earned spots on the podium in the 80K to lead the way. Beyond Canada, the ultra slate was relatively quiet across the United States, but New Englanders also raced in New York and Minnesota. We have it all covered in this edition of the roundup.

The last weekend of June is Western States weekend in the ultrarunning world, and the sport’s original 100-mile trail race hijacks coverage from nearly every other event as all eyes turn to the hallowed trails of California. Several runners from the region were among the participants at Western States, and we’ll give them their due in a separate recap, but there was plenty of additional ultrarunning action during the June 27-29 weekend – including here in New England. Two ultras took place in Connecticut – the Centurion Ultra Trail and the Brooksvale 12-hour. Additionally, runners from the region took part in multiple other events across the country. Results from Brooksvale were unavailable at the time of publication, but we lead off this edition of the roundup with Centurion where several runners turned in big mileage efforts at the Roosevelt Forest.

The June 20-22 weekend was the busiest of the year for the New England ultrarunning calendar with six ultras throughout the region. Still, several New Englanders kept busy taking on challenging courses in other parts of the country. Here in Part I of this week’s roundup we catch up on results from beyond the Northeast, with distances ranging from 46K to 200 miles.

The June 13-15 weekend was relatively quiet on the New England ultrarunning scene, with runners gathering at one race in Connecticut and scattering to just a handful of others across the country. Locally, a pair of Massachusetts residents earned victories at the Ansonia Six-Hour Trail Run in Connecticut, while a few more raced in Wisconsin and New York. It all adds up to some light reading in this edition of the roundup.

New Englanders collected hard-earned finishes – and a few victories – at ultramarathons in the West and Midwest during the June 6-8 weekend. Here in Part II of this week’s roundup we check in on those regions, with results from California, Michigan, Nevada and Colorado, but a pair of New England women lead us off with Shae Regan’s overall win at the Malibu Canyon 50K and Johanna Ylanen’s victory at the Huron 100.

The June 6-8 weekend was busy for New England ultrarunners who took on races from coast to coast. In this week’s two-part roundup, we begin on the East Coast where a large gathering of runners took part in the Drummer Hill Trail Races in New Hampshire. Then we head to Virginia for the classic Old Dominion 100 and the Dam Yeti 50, before closing out in South Carolina at the Hell Hole 100.
