MassUltra Roundup: Castle Peak, Lost Cat, Cascade Crest, and Anchor Down

After a few busy weeks of in-state ultras in Massachusetts, Aug. 24-25 was a quiet racing weekend in the Bay State. That didn’t keep runners from New England off the trails, however. Several raced in neighboring Vermont at the Lost Cat 50K, while a few headed to the West Cost to race at the Castle Peak 100K in California and the Cascade Crest 100-miler in Washington. Britta Clark was among them as the 25-year-old from Goshen, Vt., delivered a course record-setting performance at Castle Peak. Additionally, we tracked down results from the Anchor Down Ultra on Aug. 16-17 in Rhode Island for this week’s roundup. MassUltra Roundup: Catskill Mountain, Eastern States, Ragged, Beast of Burden, Green Lakes, and the Nifty Fifty

Even with two in-state ultramarathons on the Aug. 10-11 weekend, several runners headed beyond the Bay State to race. Six of those races are featured in this week’s roundup, led by Cambridge resident Jenny Hoffman’s overall victory at the Catskill Mountain 100K and the return of the Eastern States 100. MassUltra Roundup: Moosalamoo, Angeles Crest, Volcanic, and Sheep Mountain

Britta Clark continued her recent domination of New England ultras with her overall win at the Moosalamoo 36-miler on Saturday in Vermont, leading a large contingent of New England runners. Additionally, Dan Kelley of Lynnfield, Mass., made his 100-mile debut with a strong showing at Angeles Crest in California, Cambridge resident David Huang tackled the tough Volcanic 50K in Washington, and Medford’s Emily Holland made her ultramarathon debut at the high-alpine Sheep Mountain 50K in Colorado. Details from those four races are featured in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Moosalamoo, Angeles Crest, Volcanic, and Sheep Mountain

MassUltra Roundup: High Lonesome, Burning River, Never Summer, and Minnesota Voyageur

The summer 100-miler season is in high gear, and New England ultrarunners took on some tough ones at the high-altitude High Lonesome 100 in Colorado and the hot and humid Burning River 100 in Ohio. Additionally, a few runners from the region took on the tough Never Summer 100K in Colorado and the classic Minnesota Voyageur 50-miler in Minnesota. We have all of those races covered in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: High Lonesome, Burning River, Never Summer, and Minnesota Voyageur

MassUltra Roundup: Speedgoat and Tahoe 100

Most New England runners who spent the July 20-21 weekend racing did so at the Vermont 100, one of the sport’s original 100-mile footraces. So many did so, in fact, that we’ll have it covered in a separate writeup. Meanwhile, a handful of runners from the region headed West to tackle two of the country’s more challenging trail ultras – the Speedgoat 50K in Utah and the Tahoe Rim Trail 100-Mile Endurance Run in Nevada. Both of those races are covered in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Speedgoat and Tahoe 100

MassUltra Roundup: Ethan Allen, Mt. Hood, Peak, and Beaverhead

For New England ultrarunners, the July 13-14 weekend was the calm before the storm, so to speak. That’s because it was one week before the Vermont 100, the classic 100-mile footrace that draws hundreds of runners from the region to race on what is almost always one of the hottest weekends of the year. For those not taking on Vermont 100, however, there were a few races that attracted runners from the region. Most notably, several took on the fixed-time track race at the Ethan Allen 24 in Bennington, Vt. Additionally, others headed West to California, Oregon and Idaho for tough races. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Ethan Allen, Mt. Hood, Peak, and Beaverhead

MassUltra Roundup: Afton, Finger Lakes, Silver Rush, ANF, and Last Call

Notchview Reservation in Windsor, Mass., was the scene for most New England ultrarunners who spent Fourth of July weekend racing. That said, a handful headed beyond the Bay State to race, be it in nearby New York for the classic Finger Lakes 50s, the upper Midwest where Boston’s Lance Doherty earned a top-10 finish at the Afton Trail 50K in Minnesota, California at the Angeles National Forest, or Colorado where runners took on 50-milers in Leadville and Fairplay. We’ve got them all covered in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Afton, Finger Lakes, Silver Rush, ANF, and Last Call

MassUltra Roundup: Forbidden Forest, TGNY, and the Mountain Lakes Backyard Ultra

All eyes were on the Western States Endurance Run last weekend – well, almost all eyes. Some were focused on the trail of Roosevelt Forest in Stratford, Conn., where 68 runners took part in the 30-Hour Forbidden Forest Ultra, including 12 runners who finished more than 100 miles. In addition to that race, we also recap two out-of-state ultras from June 22-23 – the Great New York 100-Mile Running Exposition where Sheffield, Mass., resident John Kemp finished on the podium, and the inaugural Mountain Lakes Backyard Ultra in New York. That makes for some light reading as we’ve recapped the performances of New England runners at Western States in a separate write-up. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Forbidden Forest, TGNY, and the Mountain Lakes Backyard Ultra

MassUltra Roundup: Manitou’s Revenge, Catamount, Broken Arrow, Many on the Genny, and Old Cascadia

While more than 130 runners were taking on the trails of Pittsfield State Forest in western Massachusetts for the 50K and 25K races at the BURCS’ Vegan Power Trail Races, several more runners headed out-of-state to race. Some headed to neighboring New York, where Westborough’s Ben Nephew brought home a win and Woburn’s Samantha LeBlanc earned a second-place finish; others went north to Vermont for the popular Catamount 50K. Others, like Pittsfield’s Kehr Davis, took on the grueling Broken Arrow Sky Race in California, while a few more raced the Many on the Genny 50K in New York and the 50-mile race at Oregon’s Old Cascadia. Those five races are featured in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Manitou’s Revenge, Catamount, Broken Arrow, Many on the Genny, and Old Cascadia

MassUltra Roundup: Drummer Hill, Run Ragged, and Bighorn

Will Swenson of Andover, Mass., made a successful debut at the Drummer Hill 50K in New Hampshire, taking top honors in the men’s field, while Mont Vernon, N.H., resident Yuki Chorney improved on her runner-up effort a year ago by bringing home the women’s win on Saturday. Additionally, plenty of runners from the region took part in Connecticut’s first last-person-standing race, and a handful of others traveled to Wyoming to take part in the Big Horn Trail Race ultras. We’ve got all three races covered in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Drummer Hill, Run Ragged, and Bighorn
