The first weekend of February was a busy one for New England ultrarunners with the second annual TARCtic Frozen Yeti 30-hour ultra at Hale Reservation in Westwood, Mass., but a few runners sought warmer weather at races beyond the region. That included the Elephant Mountain 50K in Arizona and the Rocky Raccoon 100-miler and 100K in Texas, but Somerville’s Brian Burke highlighted the weekend with his runner-up finish at the Wild Florida 120-miler. Those three races are featured in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Wild Florida, Rocky Raccoon, and Elephant Mountain

MassUltra Roundup: Arches Ultra and the AZT Oracle Rumble
With the second annual TARCtic Frozen Yeti just a week away, the final weekend of January was light on ultramarathon racing for runners in Massachusetts and greater New England, but a handful headed West for some warmer-weather racing at the Arches Ultra in Utah and the AZT Oracle Rumble in Arizona. The most notable performance, however, came from a former Somerville resident – Nora Weathers – who brought home the win in the Arches Ultra with a course record-setting performance. MassUltra Roundup: Coldwater Rumble
Winter has taken hold in New England, and while cold-weather fatass-style events have filled the Massachusetts ultra calendar early in the year a handful of runners from the region sought out warmer weather and drier trails during the Jan. 18-19 weekend at the 10th annual Coldwater Rumble Ultras in Goodyear, Ariz. MassUltra Roundup: Bandera and Frozen Gnome
Two fatass-style ultramarathons occupy the January slate in Massachusetts, with the G.A.C. Fat Ass 50K having taken place Jan. 4 and the Cape Cod Frozen Fat Ass 50K coming up Jan. 18 in Barnstable. The weekend between them, Jan. 11-12, featured a slight slate of ultras nationally, but two Massachusetts residents collected hard-earned finishes at out-of-state races. In Texas, Boylston’s Neil Feldman battled to the finish line of the challenging Bandera 100K, while Boston’s Wilson Ray logged his first ultra finish at the Frozen Gnome 50K in Illinois. Both races are included in this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Bandera and Frozen Gnome

MassUltra Roundup: Dreadmill Endurance Challenge

MassUltra Roundup: Joe McConaughy’s Track 100-Miler, the Woodside Ramble and Tallahassee Ultra Distance Classic
Massachusetts ultrarunners rung in the holiday season with a few solid performances, the most festive coming from Boston resident Joe McConaughy who raised more than $2,000 for the Crohn’s and Colitis foundation by running 100 miles on a track. Additionally, another Boston resident gave herself the gift of becoming an ultrarunner as Jacqueline Kressee finished the Woodside Ramble 50K in California, and Bolton resident Sandee Richards celebrated the season by crossing the finish line of the 50K race at the Tallahassee Ultra Distance Classic in Florida. Those three events make for some cheerful holiday reading in this week’s roundup. MassUltra Roundup: Daytona, Brazos Bend, Devil Dog, and the McDowell Mountain Frenzy
Only a handful of racing opportunities remain as the 2019 ultramarathon racing season nears its conclusion. New England residents seized on a few of those opportunities on the Dec. 7-8 weekend, with some racing 100-milers in Florida, Texas and South Carolina, and others racing 50 miles or 50K in Arizona. The warm weather fueled some fast performances, but none were better than Lynnfield resident Lori Mitchener’s victory at the Daytona 100. Her trip to Victory Lane leads off this week’s roundup.
