MassUltra Roundup: Shawangunk, Virgil Crest, Wasatch, and Pine Creek Challenge

September is typically the busiest month of the ultrarunning racing calendar, and the Sept. 9-11 weekend was no exception with dozens of races throughout the country – including a few in New England, including the popular TARC Fall Classic in Massachusetts that attracted more than 300 runners. Part One of this week’s roundup featured the Groton Forest Trail Run in Vermont, Megunticook 50K in Maine, Tunxis and Macedonia trail ultras in Connecticut, and the Hainesport Hundred in New Jersey. Here in Part Two we feature wins by two Massachusetts residents at the Shawangunk 70-mile and 30-mile ultras, and also catch up on Virgil Crest, the Wasatch 100 and the Pine Creek Challenge.

MassUltra Roundup: Groton Forest, Megunticook, Tunxis, Macedonia, and Hainesport Hundred

September is typically the busiest month of the ultrarunning racing calendar, and the Sept. 9-11 weekend was no exception with dozens of races throughout the country – including a few in New England. The Trail Animals Running Club’s TARC Fall Classic (separate recap to come) was by far the largest attraction in the region, but several runners took on other races in the region and across the country. In fact, so many did so that this week’s roundup will be a two-parter. Here in Part One we recap Mead Binhammer’s record-seeing run at the slightly-beyond-the-marathon Groton Forest Trail Run 26.5-miler, as well as the Megunticook 50K in Maine, Tunxis and Macedonia trail ultras in Connecticut, and then catch up on the Hainesport Hundred from Sept. 3-4. Part 2 will include Virgil Cres, Shawangunk, the Wasatch 100 and the Pine Creek Challenge.

MassUltra Roundup: Firebird and The Rut

Results have been slow to trickle in from a jam-packed Labor Day weekend of racing, but results are in from a few races beyond the Bay State that saw New England residents among the finishers – and both had quite a few. First up, the fourth edition of the Firebird Trail Races in Maine saw Mary Iaculli and Jay Frontierro set women’s and men’s course records with big performances. A day later, 11 runners from the region finished the grueling The Rut 50K, and former Vermont resident David Sinclair smashed MUT king Kilian Jornet’s course record by five minutes. Both of those races are included in this edition of the roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Jigger Johnson, Continental Divide, and Green Lakes

While much of the ultrarunning world was focused on the European Alps and the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc festival with its week-long series of races and thousands of runners, a new event quietly made its debut in the White Mountains that put the beast in “Beast Coast.” After years of work, White Mountain Endurance introduced the world to the Jigger Johnson Ultras. Eighteen runners ultimately finished either the 100K or 50-mile offerings while also checking off multiple 4,000-foot peaks. As the new kid in the neighborhood, this race leads off this edition of the roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Leadville and Twisted Branch

While much of the ultrarunning world was looking ahead a week to the UTMB races in Europe, the focus of several New England ultrarunners was directed stateside at tough races in Colorado and New York. Several New Englanders took part in the classic 100-mile “Race Across the Sky” in Leadville, Colo., while many more threw down on a challenging course in New York at the Twisted Branch 100K. Both races are featured in this edition of the roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Anchor Down, Eastern States, Lover’s Lane, Bloobs Punk Ass, and Waldo

The summer ultra racing season continues to heat up, and some of the hottest racing during the Aug. 12-14 weekend was turned in at the seventh edition of the Anchor Down Ultra in Rhode Island where hundreds of runners from the region gathered to race for 6, 12 or 24 hours on a loop course. A multi-time defending champion and an upstart challenger delivered a dandy of a race, and that battle leads off this edition of the roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Ragged Stage Race, Volcanic 50, and Loopy Looper

Though the Trail Animals Running Club’s TARC Summer Classic attracted several local runners to the trails of Noon Hill Reservation in Medfield during the Aug. 5-7 weekend, it wasn’t the only draw for New England ultrarunners. Several gathered in New Hampshire for one or three days of tough racing at the Ragged Stage Race and 50K – and New Hampshire’s Leslie O’Dell highlighted the weekend with a course-record performance. Runners from the region also took part in other races such as the Volcanic 50 in Washington State and the Loopy Looper in New Jersey, but O’Dell’s effort leads off this edition of the roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Moosalamoo, Wakely Dam, and Tushars

July came to a close with lots of racing by New England ultrarunners at events in the Northeast and beyond. Several races haven’t posted their final results, but among those that did there were a few big-time performances by runners from the region. Perhaps none were bigger than Britta Clark’s smashing performance at the Moosalamoo Ultra 36-miler in Vermont. Her record-setting effort leads off this edition of the roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Cascade Crest

The post-Vermont 100 recovery week meant not many ultrarunners from New England were racing during July 22-23, but it wasn’t a completely quiet weekend. Seven runners from the region were among the finishers of the Cascade Crest 100-miler in Washington State, including two who battled into the top 10. That race gets this edition of the roundup all to itself.

MassUltra Roundup: Laugavegur, Seek the Peak, Washington Yeti, and Tahoe Rim Trail

Yes, the July 15-17 weekend was Vermont 100 weekend in New England, and yes it was Hardrock 100 weekend, too. But there was so much more going on in the world of ultra-trail running, too – including for several New England residents who didn’t partake in those two historic events (which will be covered in separate recaps). For Boston resident Laura Ricci, that meant a trip to Iceland to race a difficult 55K. For others, like Weymouth’s Amanda Beucler-Rapos, it meant running – and winning – her first ultramarathon at Seek the Peak in New Hampshire. Other runners also headed west to race, such as Connecticut’s Andrew Orefice who earned a spot on the podium at the Washington Yeti 100-miler. Those races and more are included in this edition of the roundup.
