The 15th season of the TARC Trail Series concluded with the annual TARC Winter Classic on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, at the Middlesex Fells Reservation in Stoneham, Mass. It was the 16th running of the event overall, 14th edition under the TARC umbrella, and third year with the new Winter Classic format that offered an 8-mile single-loop race on the Skyline Trail alongside a 32-mile, four-loop race. Additionally, after two years without it, the event’s other traditional ultra distance – the five-loop 40-miler – returned to the lineup.

The Trail Animals Running Club (TARC) played host to the 12th edition of the TARC Winter Classic on Saturday, Dec. 22, at the Middlesex Fells Reservation in Stoneham, Mass. The event took on a bit of a new look this year as it varied from its traditional Fells Winter Ultra lineup. Gone was the five-loop 40-mile ultra, but the four-loop 32-mile ultra remained and a new one-loop 8-mile race was added to the lineup.

TARC Fells Winter Ultra Returns with Spirited Racing
The Trail Animals Running Club typically has evaded early-winter hibernation with the annual running of the Fells Winter Ultra during the first weekend of December at the Middlesex Fells Reservation. That wasn’t the case in 2020, however; the club was forced to cancel the event as the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the trail ultrarunning schedule locally and globally.
The Fells Winter Ultra made its return on Saturday, Dec. 4, as runners once again flocked to the trailhead in Stoneham, Mass., to tackle four or five loops of the reservation’s rocky and rugged Skyline Trail in 32- and 40-mile races.
