MassUltra Roundup: IAU 24-Hour World Championships

Massachusetts was represented on the world stage at the International Association of Ultrarunners’ 24-Hour World Championships on July 1-2 in Belfast, Ireland.

Cambridge resident Jenny Hoffman was one of seven women who represented the United States at the World Championships as a member of the US National 24-Hour Running Team. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: IAU 24-Hour World Championships

MassUltra Roundup: Catamount, Bay of Fundy, and Bryce

Massachusetts ultrarunners didn’t have to venture far from home to race on June 24-25 – well … other than the lucky few who got to run Western States (that’ll be included in another article) – because the Catamount Ultra 50K in Vermont and the inaugural 50K at the Bay of Fundy Marathon in Maine took place last weekend. Massachusetts residents won both of those races. Additionally, we tracked down results from the Bryce 50K on June 17 in Utah to round out this week’s roundup. MassUltra Roundup: Manitou’s Revenge, Bighorn, the Broken Arrow Skyrace, Drummer Hill, and Infinitus

Ben Nephew and Kehr Davis threw down strong performances en route to victories at Manitou’s Revenge in New York; Joseph D’Alessio, Christopher Agbay and Dane LeBlanc overcame freezing rain and massive quantities of mud to complete the Bighorn 100 in Wyoming; Michael Barrett conquered the grueling Broken Arrow Skyrace in California; and we tracked down older results from Drummer Hill in New Hampshire and Infinitus in Vermont in this week’s roundup. MassUltra Roundup: Cayuga Trails and Worlds End

Massachusetts ultrarunners made their presence felt at the USATF 50-Mile Championships at Cayuga Trails in New York as two men and three women finished in the top 10 in their respective divisions. Meanwhile, Tess Harvey tackled a rugged 50K in Pennsylvania at Worlds End State Park.

There were at least 30 ultramarathons around the United States on June 3-4, but it was a light weekend of racing for runners from the Bay State with two in-state races on the horizon. The inaugural North Face Endurance Challenge 50-miler and 50K races take place Saturday, June 10, at Wachusett Mountain, followed by the Berkshire Ultrarunning Community for Service’s annual Vegan Power 50K on June 17 in Pittsfield. MassUltra Roundup: Pineland Farms, Manchester 2 Monadnock, and the Keys Ultras

In what was a light weekend for ultras throughout the United States, a large crop of runners headed to Maine May 27-28 for the annual trail running festival at Pineland Farms. Massachusetts runners brought home victories there. In addition, we catch up with two races from the prior weekend – Manchester 2 Monadnock and the Keys Ultras – in this week’s roundup. MassUltra Roundup: Cruel Jewel, Quest for the Crest, Kettletown, and 3 Days at the Fair

When the Cruel Jewel doled out its punishment on Tom Flummerfelt in 2016, the Winchester, Mass., resident apparently didn’t get enough of it. He followed up his sixth-place finish from a year ago by finishing fourth at the grueling Georgia race last weekend. Flummerfelt wasn’t the lone Massachusetts resident to finish the Cruel Jewel and secure a Hardrock Hundred qualifier, however. Melrose resident Ryan Knapp did, too. The duo’s monster performances in Georgia headline this week’s roundup, which also includes results from the Quest for the Crest 50K in North Carolina, the 50K at Connecticut’s Kettletown State Park, and some strong showings at 3 Days at the Fair in New Jersey. MassUltra Roundup: Massanutten, Jack Bristol, Miwok, Strolling Jim, and Spring Fling 600

A trio of Massachusetts ultrarunners added to their string of finishes at the Massanutten 100-miler in Virginia, Jenny Hoffman secured another victory at the Jack Bristol 50-miler, and local runners also took on the Miwok 100K in California, the Strolling Jim 40-miler in Tennessee, and the Spring Fling 600-minute run in Connecticut.

More results – including the Big A 50K and the Rock the Ridge 50-miler – are still being tracked down and will be included in next week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Massanutten, Jack Bristol, Miwok, Strolling Jim, and Spring Fling 600

MassUltra Roundup: Promise Land, TNFEC – DC, Tillamook Burn, and Hyner 50K

From a UROC tune-up in Virginia, to The North Face Endurance Challenge in the nation’s capitol, to the Tillamook Burn in Oregon, Massachusetts ultrarunners took to the trails on both coasts on April 29-30. Additionally, we tracked down results from the Hyner 50K in Pennsylvania for this week’s roundup. Continue reading MassUltra Roundup: Promise Land, TNFEC – DC, Tillamook Burn, and Hyner 50K
