MassUltra Roundup: Flagstaff to Grand Canyon, IMTUF, Javelina Jangover, Mammoth Trailfest, and Three Sisters Skyline

The Sept. 19-21 weekend saw several dozen ultrarunners tackle the Kilkenny Ridge in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. It was the lone ultra in New England during the weekend, and we’ll have it covered in Part II of this week’s roundup along with a few other ultras on the East Coast. But here in Part I we head West and catch up on New Englanders who raced hard and secured finishes at distances from 50K to 100 miles in Arizona, Idaho, California, and Oregon.

MassUltra Roundup: Pisgah, Virgil Crest, Shawangunk, Boulder Field, Pine to Palm, and Snow Mountain Ranch

Pisgah was the place to be for New England ultrarunners during the Sept. 12-14 weekend. What was otherwise a quiet weekend in the region saw some serious racing and close finishes on the trails of New Hampshire, with New England legends Brian Rusiecki and David Herr turning in another classic. Beyond the region, several runners tackled ultras in nearby New York and Pennsylvania, while others headed west to Oregon and Colorado. Additionally, New Englanders raced the Brookfield Classic and Pawling 24-Hour in New York and Run Rabbit Run in Colorado, but results were unavailable at the time of publication. Still, there is plenty of action to catch up on in this edition of the roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Mogollon Monster, Pine Creek Challenge, and Noble Canyon

The Sept. 5-7 weekend was plenty busy in New England, and Part I of this week’s roundup focused on the regional events. Here in Part II we catch up on how New Englanders fared at ultras outside the region. We start in Arizona, where Connecticut’s Jared Dybas had a strong showing at the Mogollon Monster 100-miler. Then we stop in Pennsylvania where Maine’s Christopher Towle secured a podium finish at the Pine Creek Challenge. We finish up in California where Massachusetts resident Takafumi Takai earned his third ultramarathon finish of the year with a speedy run at the Noble Canyon 50K. Additionally, New Englanders traveled to race the Backcountry Rise 50K in Washington, the Superior 100- and 50-mile trail races in Minnesota, and the Wasatch Front 100-miler in Utah, though results from those events were not available at the time of publication.

MassUltra Roundup: Megunticook, Cherry Hill Farm, Macedonia, and the Cross-Connecticut Run for Mental Health Awareness

More than 500 runners gathered in Carlisle, Mass., for the Trail Animals Running Club’s TARC Fall Classic on Saturday, Sept. 6. While that event – which will be covered in a separate recap – was the region’s largest ultramarathon event during the Sept. 5-7 weekend, it was far from the only one taking place in New England. Four more ultras were held throughout the region, with two events apiece in Connecticut and Maine. We have all of that New England goodness covered in this edition of the roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Fire and Ice, Black Bear, Jay Peak, Five Fields Farm, and Last Man Standing

August ended with a bang for ultrarunners in New England with four events scattered throughout the region, including races in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. But runners from the region also showcased their grit globally. Though UTMB’s results only list runners by nationality and thus are not included in this roundup, Vermont’s Britta Clark finished 27th in the female field (31:11:19) at UTMB and fellow Vermonter David Sinclair was the male runner-up in the 101K CCC (10:13:42). Additionally, a pair of New England women thrived at a grueling 250K, six-day stage race in Iceland with Boston resident Laura Ricci emerging as a champion. That international success leads off this edition of the roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Firebird Trail Races, Green Lakes, Midwest States, Continental Divide, and Winona Forest

The Aug. 22-24 weekend saw dozens of runners gather in Egremont, Mass., for challenging miles at the Berkshire Ultra Running Community for Service’s (BURCS) Jug End Loop Ultra. We’ll have that covered in a separate recap, but here in this week’s roundup we catch up on results from the Firebird Trail Races in Maine, as well as the Green Lakes Endurance Runs in New York which saw New Englanders atop the podium. We then catch up on Midwest States in Wisconsin, the Continental Divide Trail Run in Colorado, and then return to New York to close out with the Winona Forest Backyard Ultra.

MassUltra Roundup: Jigger Johnson, ALFC 50K, Shenipsit Striders 50th Fatass, Fabulous Fahnestock, and Tamalpa Headlands

The Aug. 15-17 weekend was a big one in New England. In addition to the Trail Animals Running Club’s TARC Summer Classic in Massachusetts (separate recap to follow), three additional ultras took place throughout the region. The gnarly Jigger Johnson Ultras once again pounded runners in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, while runners gathered for some more laid-back fun at the Aliza Lapierre Fan Club 50K in Vermont and the Shenipsit Striders’ 50th anniversary fatass 8-hour run in Connecticut. We have all of those covered – as well as Fabulous Fahnestock in New York and the Tamalpa Headlands 50K in California – in this week’s roundup.

MassUltra Roundup: Anchor Down, Lover’s Lane, Bigfoot 200, and Wy’East Trail Fest

The weather was unseasonably pleasant, but the summer ultramarathon racing heated up in New England and beyond during the Aug. 8-10 weekend. In Massachusetts, that meant the popular BURCS Sweltering Summer 8-Hour was the place to be in Pittsfield. We’ll have that covered in a separate recap. But here in this week’s roundup we begin in New England where runners ran into – and through – the night at Rhode Island’s Anchor Down Ultra, and also stop in Vermont for the Lover’s Lane time-based races. Then we head West where a teenager from New Hampshire dazzled at the Bigfoot 200, before closing out with the Wy’East Trail Fest.

We begin in New England, where James Boeding and Christina Danosi delivered dominant three-day efforts in winning the Ragged 75 Stage Race in New Hampshire, followed by a stop in Maine where Isaac Vaccaro earned a three-peat at the Blue Hill Mountain Trail Fest.
