Jennifer E. Rizzo is a writer and ultra marathon runner living on Boston's north shore. Rizzo is also a mom (to both humans and a dog), a wife, an autism advocate and an avid maker of all the pretty things. Rizzo was as an opera singer, having earned her masters degree in music from New England Conservatory, and was active in the Boston area and abroad for several years. She then earned her masters degree in business from Boston University, and worked for many years in human resources. In 2015, she founded Sugar Dish Bakery, a successful cake and cookie design and decorating business. Rizzo started running with a local mom’s group shortly after having her first child. Since then, she has run several marathons and 50k's, two 50 mile races, and one 100 mile race. She is currently training for the Riverlands 100 mile race in May 2022.

The Lynn Woods: Finding my Tribe and Passion for Ultra Running

Armed with a brand new pair of trail shoes and a can of bug spray, I arrived for my first trail race in the Lynn Woods on a hot and humid Wednesday night in 2018.

I had never run trails before. But that night, I pretended I knew what I was doing as I charged up steep, rocky hills and over rolling single track sprinkled with pine needles. At the end of the race, along with the new friends I had made along the way, I crossed the finish line to cheers and flashing cameras. 

That night would change the course of my running, and ultimately, my life. I didn’t know it at the time, but I had just begun chasing an ultramarathon dream.
