The snow is finally melting in New England and spring is almost here. The March 6-8 weekend was quiet across the region, but several New Englanders still found places to race throughout the country. In a rarity for this time of year, most stayed in the east, venturing as far south as Florida while staying as close to home as New Jersey. Others traveled to South Carolina, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, as well as out west to Oregon. Nobody had a better weekend than Rhode Island resident Cole Crosby who rode a train to the starting line before running to the finish – and placing first – at the Lenape Trail Run 34-miler. His victory leads off this edition of the roundup.
Lenape Trail Run
After enjoying a bit of down time following his 224.33-mile performance in the 48-hour race at Across the Years, Cole Crosby returned to ultramarathon racing at the 12th annual Lenape Trail Run on Saturday, March 7, in Millburn, N.J. Crosby and his fellow runners gathered at the finish line at South Mountain Reservation’s Locust Grove trailhead, then hopped a train to Newark. Upon arrival at the station, the race began and the runners raced along the 34-mile trail back to Locust Grove.
Crosby finished the fastest – and he did so by a sizable margin. The 37-year-old from Cranston, R.I., won the race in 5:51:00. His closest competitor was 41-year-old Matthew Vogios of Seaside Park, N.J., who followed in 6:21:00. Seventeen runners finished within 11 hours. Devi Ganti, 27, of Bayonne, N.J., was the top female finisher in 7:59:00.

A pair of New Hampshire residents earned podium finishes at the Livingston Oval Ultra on Saturday, March 7, in Livingston, N.J. Another 44 runners completed the 50-mile race; no New England residents took part at that distance.
Long Play Trail Run
Trail running in Florida has earned a special place in Rick Horton’s heart during the past few years. The 53-year-old from Winchester, N.H., has made several trips to the state to race, most recently in January when he finished the Long Haul 100 in Lakeland for the second time. He is also a two-time finisher of the Tampa Bay 100.
Horton added another ultra in the state to his resume when he completed the Long Play Trail Run 33-miler on Saturday, March 7, in Brooksville, Fla. The 13th annual event featured a single-loop singletrack course on the trails of the Withlacoochee State Forest. Eighty-six runners finished the race, and Horton placed 28th in 6:56:28.
Multi-time finisher of the Long Haul 100 in Lakeland and Tampa Bay 100 in Tampa Bay, as well as a finisher of the Lost 188 run in Lake Okeechobee.
