Hale Education in Westwood, Mass., was the busiest place for ultrarunners to gather in New England during the March 20-22 weekend as the Trail Animals Running Club played host to the To Hale and Back 6-hour ultra, but it wasn’t the only hot spot in the region. Runners also gathered at the Roosevelt Forest in Stratford, Conn., for another time-based opportunity at the Enchanted Forest Ultra Run. Several New Englanders also ventured outside the region to race, including New Hampshire’s Erica Notini and Massachusetts resident Scot DeDeo who placed on the podium at the Southern States 200- and 100-mile races in Alabama. Bay Stater Shannon Mellett tied for the win in the 12-hour race at the Dogwood Ultras in Virginia, and New Hampshire’s Ryan Montgomery secured a podium finish at Big Alta in California. The March 13-15 weekend saw two ultra distance events play out in New England, one on foot and one on skis. Both of those were covered in Part I of this week’s roundup. Here in Part II, we catch up on how New Englanders did at other ultras around the country, making stops in California, Arizona, Pennsylvania and Florida. Boston resident Tilman Dette leads it off with a strong performance at a large West Coast race.

The snow has finally melted across southern New England, and that freed up the trails for ultramarathon running during the March 13-15 weekend. Up north was a different story. Snow remained, which made ideal conditions for another ultra event – though on skis – at the TruStrength “Uphill Will” 24-Hour Skimo race in Maine. The snow is finally melting in New England and spring is almost here. The March 6-8 weekend was quiet across the region, but several New Englanders still found places to race throughout the country. In a rarity for this time of year, most stayed in the east, venturing as far south as Florida while staying as close to home as New Jersey. Others traveled to South Carolina, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, as well as out west to Oregon. Nobody had a better weekend than Rhode Island resident Cole Crosby who rode a train to the starting line before running to the finish – and placing first – at the Lenape Trail Run 34-miler. His victory leads off this edition of the roundup.

A very snowy February came to a close with a relatively quiet weekend of racing for New England ultrarunners. None raced regionally, and just a handful scattered to other areas to race during the Feb. 27-March 1 weekend. For those who did, they found success on the trails of Utah, Maryland and California. Nobody had a better weekend than Shane Skiff as the 23-year-old from Vermont raced to a podium finish at the Moab Red Hot Ultra 55K. His strong effort leads off this edition of the roundup.
