MassUltra Roundup: Left Nut 50, Beast of the East, RunFluent, and Naked Nick

The final weeks of 2025 are upon us, and New Englanders are squeezing in a few final ultramarathons to close out the year. During the Dec. 13-14 weekend, that included a pair of events in the region, with the inaugural Left Nut 50 in Rhode Island and the eighth annual Jingle My Frosty Balls 8-Hour in New Hampshire. Results of the latter were unavailable, though dozens of runners took part and the event raised $320 for local charities. Beyond New England, runners from the region stayed in the east, venturing to Florida and Pennsylvania, as well as North Carolina – where Connecticut’s David Stawski closed out a dozen 100-milers in a dozen months at Beast of the East. We have it all covered in this edition of the roundup.

Left Nut 50

The final ultramarathon of the year in Rhode Island was held at a familiar place. The inaugural Left Nut 50 treated runners to numerous loops of the 2.45-mile course best known from the popular Anchor Down Ultra when the fat ass-style event was held on Saturday, Dec. 13 at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I. Runners took on a mix of trail and paved path, with runners in the 50-miler completing 20 laps and an additional 1-mile out-and-back while amassing 1,120 feet of gain, while those in the 50K completed 13 laps and 728 feet of climbing.

Austin Laberge, 29, of Swansea, Mass., led the field of nine finishers of the 50-miler in 7:55:49. Top female Miranda Gajda, 31, of East Chatham, N.Y., finished second overall in 8:12:38. She was the lone female finisher. Dan Hurley, 39, of Everett, Mass., and Joe Spinazola, 32, of East Chatham, N.Y., rounded out the male podium in 8:22:41 and 8:53:27, respectively. Additional finishers were Ethan Smith, 25, of North Stonington, Conn. (9:36:17); Daniel Duperval, 23, of New London, Conn. (9:39:20); Corey Davidge, 28, of Blackstone, Mass. In the 50K race, the top two female finishers led the overall field, with 59-year-old Eve Campeau of Bedminster, N.J., holding off 35-year-old Holly Koksel of Madison, N.J., for the win, with Campeau finishing in 4:26:21 and Koksel following six minutes later in 4:32:12. Top male Murat Koksel, 47, was third overall in 4:57:57, followed by male runner-up Chris Pabian, 49, of Pittsburgh, Pa., in 5:12:30. Nineteen runners finished the 50K, most within eight hours.

Beast of the East

David Stawski completed a 100-mile race every month in 2025. He capped that remarkable year with one of his finest efforts when he earned a place on the podium at the eighth annual Beast of the East 100 on Dec. 13-14 in Kings Mountain, N.C. Stawski was one of 52 runners who took on a burly course with big climbs and 17,925 feet of gain on technical trails. Of those who started, 36 finished within the 34-hour time limit. Stawski was among the top performers, placing third overall and second in the male field in 23:55:12. Top male Caleb Baity, 32, of Huntersville, N.C., was first overall in 22:35:41 and top female Brenda Johnson, 45, of Lancaster, S.C., finished second overall. The top three runners were the only sub-25-hour finishers.

The performance capped a massive year for Stawski that began with a victory at the Beast of Burden Winter 100-miler in January. He followed it up with a first-place finish in the Snow Moon 24-Hour Virtual Challenge in February by running 100 miles. In March, he was back to in-person racing with a seventh-place finish at the Rabid Raccoon 100 in Pennsylvania, followed by a successful finish at the C&O Canal 100 in Maryland in April, an eighth-place finish at the Chesterfield Gorge Ultra 100 in Massachusetts in May, and a second-place finish with 103.2 miles at the Centurion Ultra Trail Event in June in Connecticut.
