Nearly 1,000 trail- and ultrarunners took part in local events in New England during the first weekend of November. We had those events covered in Part I of this week’s roundup. Here in Part II, we look outside New England and catch up on how runners from the region did at races from coast to coast.
Mountain Masochist Trail Run
Doug Schuch got his start as an ultrarunner while living in Virginia, and the Mountain Masochist has featured prominently in his history with the sport. It was his second ultra ever, and first 50-miler, in 2012. He returned and completed the distance again in 2013 and 2017.
Now, with around two dozen ultras under his belt, Schuch returned for another run at the 50-mile course at the 42nd edition of Mountain Masochist on Saturday, Nov. 1, in Montabello, Va. Racing on a loop course with singletrack trails and logging roads, the 57-year-old resident of Durham, Conn., earned his fourth finish at the event, placing 55th in 11:52:57.
Seventy-eight runners finished the 50-mile race within 15 hours, with 46-year-old Bradley Hawley of Woodbridge, Va., and 40-year-old Amy Stulman of Falls Church, Va., leading the male and female fields and finishing 1-2 overall in 8:30:24 and 8:32:35.
No New Englanders took part in the 100K race, which had 15 finishers within 17 hours. Additionally, no runners from the region were among the 109 finishers of the 50K race.
Fire Tower Frenzy
A year ago, Owen Carpenter and Craig Carpenter ran their first ultramarathon together and finished the Midstate Massive Ultra-Trail 50-miler in New England. For their second ultra, they took on the 100K distance at the third annual Fire Tower Frenzy on Saturday, Nov. 1, in Ellijay, Ga.
The race offered both 100K and 40-mile distances, and runners took on a 20-mile loop course on the trails of the Cohutta Wilderness Management Area, including a trip to the fire tower atop Grassy Mountain.
No New England residents were among the 13 finishers of the two-loop, 40-mile race. The Carpenters were among the 11 starters of the 100K, and they were the final finishers within the 20-hour time limit. Owen Carpenter, 28, of Ayer, Mass., finished sixth in 19:22:58, while Craig Carpenter, 55, of Shirley, Mass., followed three seconds behind in 19:23:01. Jeremy Lanier, 23, of Savannah, Ga., led all runners in 15:17:14 while top female Elizabeth McClain, 53, of Franklin, Tenn., finished third overall in 15:40:44.
Pinhoti 100
Greg Wolodkin is no stranger to big miles; he has completed the Vol State 500K multiple times. The 58-year-old from Sutton, Mass., added another big finish to his resume when he completed the 18th annual Pinhoti 100 on Nov. 1-2 in Sylacauga, Ala.
Wolodkin was one of 133 runners who completed the point-to-point course on the Pinhoti Trail within the 32-hour time limit. He placed 65th overall in 28:43:36. Former New Hampshire resident Jennifer Shultis, 57, of Kingston, Wash., was also among the finishers, placing 110th in 30:52:41.
Five seconds separated the top three overall finishers. Jake Russell, 27, of Clinton, Miss., led all runners in 21:39:53, edging 34-year-old Peter Kazery of Jackson, Miss., by two seconds. Third-place finisher Nate Truckenbrod, 39, of Sun Prairie, Wisc., followed three seconds after Kazery in 21:39:58. Top female Caila Coyne, 26, of Birmingham, Ala., was sixth overall in 22:45:34, four seconds ahead of runner-up Nelle Fox, 37, of Bridgewater, Va., who finished in 22:45:38.
Rio Del Lago 100
The Rio Del Lago 100-miler is one of the final opportunities for those dreaming of running the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run to qualify for the lottery, and two New Englanders successfully did so on Nov. 1-2 in Folsom, Calif.
Will Boardman, 29, and Sebastian Alvarez, 26, both were among the 196 finishers within the 30-hour time limit. Boardman, 29, of Burlington, Vt., placed 37th overall in 23:35:45 and was one of 42 sub-24-hour finishers. Alvarez, 26, of Lexington, Mass., placed 77th in 26:30:07.
Lindsey Dwyer, 34, of Larkspur, Calif., earned the overall win in 15:51:37 while top male Kyle Roberts, 34, of Granite Bay, Calif., placed second overall in 16:58:36.
Wildwood Canyon Trail Run
Brianna Desharmais closed out 2025 with her first ultramarathon finish. The 25-year-old from Freedom, N.H., did so at the inaugural Wildwood Canyon Trail Run on Saturday, Nov. 1, in Yucaipa, Calif. The event offered an 8-hour race on a 3.6-mile loop course on the trails of Wildwood Canyon State Park. Runners amassed around 600 feet of climbing per loop.
Thirty-six runners took part in the event, and 18 of them surpassed the marathon distance. That included Desharmais, who completed 29.6 miles in 7:40:00, placing 16th overall and fifth in the female field. Jake Jackson, 48, of Loma Linda, Calif., led all runners with 44.5 miles in 7:26:00. Top female Charlotte Saunders, 26, of Running Springs, Calif., was fourth overall with 40.7 miles in 7:45:00.
