The June 13-15 weekend was relatively quiet on the New England ultrarunning scene, with runners gathering at one race in Connecticut and scattering to just a handful of others across the country. Locally, a pair of Massachusetts residents earned victories at the Ansonia Six-Hour Trail Run in Connecticut, while a few more raced in Wisconsin and New York. It all adds up to some light reading in this edition of the roundup.
Ansonia Six-Hour Trail Run
A pair of Massachusetts residents earned the top positions on the podium at the fifth annual Ansonia Six-Hour Trail Run on Saturday, June 14, in Ansonia, Conn. Eric Ciocca and Faye Benoit led the male and female fields in completing the most loops on the approximately 2-mile loop course on the trails of the Ansonia Nature Center within the 6-hour time limit.
Ciocca, 47, of Northampton, Mass., hammered the loop 19 times for 38 miles and the overall victory. One loop behind, David Catarious, 56, of Shrewsbury, Mass., and Nolan McCoy, 29, of Suffield, Conn., completed 36 miles apiece for second and third overall. The trio of Aidan Desilets, 21, of Shrewsbury, Mass.; Ryan Danby, 32, of Providence, R.I.; and Christopher Colangelo, 52, of Old Lyme, Conn., followed with 34 miles apiece.
Benoit, 41, of Worcester, Mass., finished first in the female field and placed seventh overall with 16 laps and 32 miles. She was joined on the podium by Rebekah Rodriguez, 30, of Middletown, Conn., who was second with 28 miles, and 56-year-old Nina Smith of Stratford, Conn., who finished third with 22 miles.
Forty-six runners took part in the event and completed at least one loop.
Kettle Moraine
Tough running in the Midwest proved to be a stiff challenge for a pair of New England ultrarunners at the Kettle Moraine ultras on June 14-15 in LaGrange, Wisc. The classic event featured 100-mile, 100-K, 38-mile and 50K distances. No New England residents were among the 137 finishers of the 100-miler, the 49 finishers of the 38-miler, or the 78 official finishers of the 100K race.
Jennifer Kenty, 43, of Medford, Mass., started the 100-mile race but earned an unofficial 100K finish in 13:04:07. Additionally, 61-year-old Sandy Bartell of Colchester, Conn., was among the 106 finishers of the 50K distance, placing 88th in 9:36:23.
Table Rock Trail Challenge
The ninth annual Table Rock Trail Challenge last person standing event took place on Saturday, June 14, in Jamesville, N.Y. The event, which was held on the trails of Clark Reservation State Park, featured a few unique twists on traditional last person standing format events. Rather than having runners complete the typical 4.1667-mile distance with a new lap starting on the hour, every hour, the Table Rock Trail Challenge uses two looped courses – one a 1.3-mile loop and the other a 1.2-mile loop – using the first loop for the first 10 laps before shifting to the second loop. Additionally, the cutoff for each lap was reduced by 30 seconds per lap until the time limit dropped to 12 minutes per laps.
Of the 35 runners who took part, the top eight all surpassed the marathon distance. David Perry, 36, of Brewer, Maine, was the lone New England resident to do so, finishing in a five-way tie for second overall with 28.9 miles. Andrew Burns, 28, of Delmar, N.Y., completed one additional loop and won with 30.2 miles.
