New Englanders collected hard-earned finishes – and a few victories – at ultramarathons in the West and Midwest during the June 6-8 weekend. Here in Part II of this week’s roundup we check in on those regions, with results from California, Michigan, Nevada and Colorado, but a pair of New England women lead us off with Shae Regan’s overall win at the Malibu Canyon 50K and Johanna Ylanen’s victory at the Huron 100.
Malibu Canyon Trail Races
West Coast racing has been good to Shae Regan. The 21-year-old from Littleton, Mass., finished third at the San Tan Scramble 50K in Arizona in January. On June 7, she added another podium finish to her resume at the fourth annual Malibu Canyon Trail Races at Point Mugu State Park in Malibu, Calif. The event offered 100K, 50-mile and 50K races. Regan took part in the 50K, and she won the race outright in a course-record time of 4:48:43. Top male Mohamed Taha, 39, of Camarillo, Calif., was second overall in 4:56:01.
Regan was joined on the female podium by 45-year-old megan Imbres of Los Angeles, Calif., and 47-year-old Sarah Mandes of Oxnard, Calif., who raced to a sprint finish with Imbres placing second in 5:35:04 and Mandes nine seconds behind in 35:13.
Another 80 runners finished the 50-mile race, including 53-year-old Andrea Castro of Waltham, Mass., who was 41st in 12:46:41. Michael Tomchaney, 35, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Kayla Martin, 30, of Missoula, Mont., led the male and female fields in 7:13:28 and 8:48:11, respectively.
No New Englanders were among the 32 finishers of the 100K race, which saw Cory Fleming, 33, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Daisy Zepeda, 37, of La Habra, Calif., top the male and female fields in 10:10:44 and 12:25:31, respectively.
Huron 100
It has been a few years since Johanna Ylanen ran a 100-miler, but she has been a force at the distance any time she has stepped to the starting line. She last ran a 100-miler in November 2022, winning the Pinhoti 100 in Alabama. For her 100-mile return, Ylanen took on the second annual Huron 100 on June 7-8 in Grass Lake, Mich. She was among the 90 runners who gathered to take on a point-to-point course through the Huron River Watershed with 8,000 feet of climbing. Of those who started, just 52 finished within the 32-hour time limit. Ylanen was among that group – and she was also among the fastest.
Ylanen, 43, of Tolland, Conn., was the first-place female and sixth overall finisher in 22:14:43. Kirsten Bader, 36, of Clarkston, Mich., was a distant second in 25:47:11. It was Ylanen’s 12th 100-mile finish and sixth victory at the distance.
Nick Insley, 26, of Royal Oak, Mich., topped the male field in 18:29:14, followed by 35-year-old Henry Jochem of New Lexington, Ohio, in 18:46:16.
In addition to the 100-miler, the event also included a 55K race. No New Englanders were among the participants at that distance. Zach Crim, 33, of Haslett, Mich., and Viktoryia Kalesnikava, 41, of Ann Arbor, Mich., led the male and female fields in 6:35:03 and 8:58:07, respectively.
San Diego 100
Derek Kachadurian turned in a strong showing in his 100-mile debut at the 24th annual San Diego 100 on June 6-7 in Lake Cuyamaca, Calif. Racing on a loop course in the mountains that included sections of the Pacific Crest Trail, Noble Canyon, and the Cuyamaca and Anza Borrego State Parks, runners amassed more than 15,000 feet of climbing. Of the 228 runners who started, 135 finished within the 32-hour time limit. Kachadurian, 33, of Truro, Mass., finished 16th overall in 23:43:04. He was one of 19 runners who completed the race in less than 24 hours.
Rob King, 32, of Washington, Ohio, was the fastest male finisher in 19:50:00 while 37-year-old Brianna Grigsby of Tucson, Ariz., was the fastest female in 20:22:41.
Kachadurian was one of two New England residents among the finishers. James Christianson, 34, of Mount Vernon, Maine, placed 86th in 30:49:05 for his first 100-mile finish.
Sawmill Ultra
Robert Cameron had a successful run the first time he took part in the Sawmill Ultra 38.45-mile race. He finished third at the 2023 event in 7:56:42. Cameron returned for the sixth edition of the event on Saturday June 7, in Mt. Charleston, Nev., and he once again earned a place on the podium.
Cameron, 33, of Rockland, Mass., was the lone New Englander in the field. He finished fourth overall and third in the male field in 7:25:30. Eighteen runners finished the race within 13 hours. Edher Ramirez, 39, and Holly Pfaff, 32, both of Las Vegas, Nev., were the male and female winners and finished 1-2 overall in 6:35:28 and 7:05:57, respectively.
Silver State Endurance Runs
Zackary Storms earned a tough first ultramarathon finish when he completed the 50-mile race at the 40th edition of the Silver State Endurance Runs on Saturday, June 7, in Reno, Nev. Storms, 23, of West Hartford, Conn., took on a challenging mix of dirt trails and dirt roads, amassing 9,500 feet of climbing with all of it at altitude.
Of the 50 runners who started the race, 39 finished within 15 hours. Storms placed 28th in 13:55:22. Grant Hotaling, 42, of Healdsburg, Calif., and Rebecca Guenther, 45, of San Jose, Calif., led the male and female fields in 8:26:37 and 11:01:32, respectively.
No New Englanders were among the 81 finishers of the event’s 50K race. Jacob Banta, 31, of Truckee, Calif., and Jennifer Schmidt, 33, of Auburn, Calif., were the male and female champions and finished 1-3 overall in 4:06:52 and 4:29:39, respectively.
Great Divide Ultra Trail Festival
Keith McCormick had a solid run on the trails of Colorado when he took part in the fourth annual Great Divide Ultra Trail Festival on June 7-8 in Divide, Colo. McCormick, 70, of Belchertown, Mass., was the lone New Englander at the event, which offered 100-mile, 100K, and three separate 50K race options. McCormick ran the Saturday daytime 50K and was one of 63 finishers.
Jake Simon, 36, of Longmont, Colo., and Melissa Rodgers, 50, of Florissant, Colo., finished 1-2 overall and were the male and female champions in 4:58:26 and 4:59 21, respectively. McCormick placed 30th in 7:00:03. He will return to Colorado twice this summer, first to run the Ring the Springs 50K in June followed by the Chase the Moon 12-Hour in July.
